Location of Lund University

The programme provides an in-depth understanding of both the practical and the theoretical aspects of business law within the European Union and of how the internal market operates in a global context. Students also acquire knowledge of EU constitutional law as a necessary basis for the understanding of European business law.

The programme provides both general and specific knowledge of the European Union legal framework, which is necessary for students intending to work as legal advisors or business decision-makers. Students can tailor the programme to suit their own interests, which gives them a competitive edge when applying for future positions on the labour market.

Career prospects

With a unique combination of traditional legal studies in business law (i.e. contract law, company law, tax law and competition law) and economic- and trade-related issues, this programme is ideal preparation for a career within private practice, national/EU institutions or legal research. It also provides a good grounding for students interested in pursuing an academic career within the University.

Contents

The academic year of the Master Programme starts late August and runs until early June the following year. The programme constitutes full time studies and is localised to the campus in Lund. The study load is specified in credit points. One academic year consists of 60 credit points (60 ECTS according to the European credit transfer system).

Content and structure

The full Master programme represents two years of full time studies, equivalent to 120 credit points. Students can also choose to complete the first year of the programme only and will then receive a Swedish "magister" degree equivalent to 60 credit points.

A year of study is divided into two semesters, which are further divided into two study periods. The program featuring 120 credits is clearly divided in four semesters

This program offers therefore:

- A core ground of compulsory courses where all program students are gathered (during the first semester and for the dissertations);

- A choice of optional courses where a specialization may be organized in specific fields /topics, and where program students are mixed with Swedish or other exchange students qualifying the entrance requirements;

- A possibility to follow courses as optional courses in other departments, other faculties and other universities within or outside Sweden.

Courses available

The central themes of these courses include business law related topics, organized into two main themes: cross-border establishment within the EU, and the relationship between the EU and third States. These courses may for instance consist of Community law, competition law, company law, contract law, tax law, and labor law. As a support for the dissertation work, methodology courses and training skills weeks are also organized.

Teaching methods, examination and grading

The pedagogy is based on a continuous oral and written examination in small groups where preparation will be required from all students for each session. The assessment will take form of short papers based on problem solving (integrate knowledge and complexity) as well as moot court trainings (develop oral skills in stressful situations) and cost-analysis computations for business decision-making (with support of law and economics based theories).

For achieving a progression in the program, the second year of study will enhance academic skills, and train students identify lack of neutrality in the legal environment with a view to issue critical opinion and propose ideal solutions and remedies to an unsatisfactory legal issue.

The language of instruction and communication is English, i.e., all teaching and examination papers are in English. Students´ oral and written presentations that are presented to the whole class must also be in English, as well as individual written examinations.

For students studying for the Degree Master/Magister of Laws in European Business Law all courses are graded accordingly to pass, pass with credit or pass with distinction.

For students studying for the Degree Master/Magister of Science in European Business Law all courses are graded accordingly to pass or pass with distinction.
