An innovative 12-month Masters Programme offering professional training and a future career in International Relations.

Applicants to this highly distinctive MA Programme are attracted by its integrated character and especially by the opportunity which it offers to gain first-hand experience of working in Brussels . It is a consortial programme involving three departments at Lancaster University , established and co-ordinated by the Department of European Languages and Cultures.

The aim of this unusual Masters programme is to give students from a variety of backgrounds an academic and professional grounding in the operations of the European Union. As such, it is ideally suited to a graduate who wishes to make a career in international relations with a particular emphasis on Europe.

The Programme has the following objectives:

* to inform students of the recent history and background to the political institutions of the European Union;
* to familiarise them with the operation of EU institutions and with the processes of policy-making;
* to develop a working knowledge of EU law and of its practical implications in the running of the Union;
* to develop an understanding of the relationship between EU, national and regional policy and of the way in which they interact in real life;
* to provide students with a first-hand insight into the administration of EU affairs and to develop their professional competencies: most notably, the ability to gather and analyse information, negotiate, write and present reports and operate professionally in a multi-cultural environment;
* to enhance their working knowledge of European languages.

Course Structure

1st Phase - Study Modules

The first phase of the course corresponds to the Michaelmas Term at Lancaster University and lasts from October to December. The programme of study during this period consists of three modules of 20-25 contact hours, each with regular written assessments. The modules listed below will offer you a solid academic grounding in the key disciplines on which the concept of European Union is based.

* European Union Law
* Politics of the European Union
* Environmental Regulation in the European Union

The coverage offered by the modules is enhanced by additional lectures and seminars in the Departments of History and European Languages and Cultures and by regular two-hour postgraduate symposia organised by the Department of Politics and International Relations.

2nd Phase - the Brussels placement

The second phase consists of a placement in an EU policy-making agency. It lasts from January to June. We currently enjoy strong working relationships with five organisations in Brussels , and are therefore in a position to offer a limited number of places before you begin the programme. Placements are offered on a strictly selective basis. We interview shortlisted candidates in early July in order to direct them towards appropriate posts. All the posts are directly relevant to the policy-making process and involve contact with officers of the European Commission and related agencies. Pay and conditions vary according to the placement. Further information on these are provided at interview.

3rd Phase - the Dissertation

The third and final phase of the MA normally takes place back in Lancaster and involves writing up your dissertation under supervision. The dissertation consists of an extended piece of analytical writing of 20,000 words, excluding appendices and bibliography. It should conform to academic standards of style and presentation and will differ in tone and range of reference from a working document or report. It aims to give you the opportunity to explore in depth a particular concept or issue relating to European Union and to bring together the knowledge you have acquired on the course as a whole. It is submitted before mid-September and, if successful, you formally graduate at a ceremony held at Lancaster University in December.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
