The aim is to educate archivists who will be able to draw up and implement, from first principles, archive management solutions appropriate to such collections, and to give leadership in this field. In addition, the programme aims to give students an understanding of the historical processes that have generated records and the history of record-keeping in Ireland; the key repositories in which historical records are held and how to utilise such records in their work as archivists. It is thus a programme that combines theory and practice, where skills such as preservation management, palaeography, XML encoding and cataloguing to ISAD(G) standards are taught within larger archival science and history frameworks. The lecturing staff are drawn from the History Department, Library and An Foras Feasa (under the chairmanship of the History Department 2010).
