The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Hong Kong) is a collaborative venture between Lancaster and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Lancaster staff do all the teaching in short intensive blocks, and the teaching takes place in the School of Continuing Studies in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which also provides administrative and learning support (e.g. library access). The aim of the MA is to provide professionally relevant and practically oriented training that is tailored to the needs of local English teachers.
This Lancaster MA is designed specifically for English language professionals resident in Hong Kong who have at least two years’ language teaching experience. It is a two-year, part-time degree which is designed so that language professionals can gain a Lancaster MA while continuing to work in Hong Kong.
All the modules are delivered face-to-face in intensive 10 day blocks (evenings and weekend teaching) at approximately two-month intervals. The content, methods and standards of assessment of the modules is the same as for the Lancaster-based teaching but every effort is made to also relate ideas to HK-specific issues. During each module students will receive a study pack consisting of handouts and other materials. A core textbook for each module is also provided.
During the dissertation phase of the programme, there are at least two face-to-face dissertation supervision meetings as well as on-going e-mail support.
The following table shows the elements of the MA TESOL that we intend to run for the year 2010/11.
Modules - Foundation Module, Research Methods, Trends and Issues in Language Teaching Methodology, Task Based Language Teaching ,Second Language Learning ,Corpus Linguistics,Gender and Language, Classroom Language Testing
There are courses that may vary from one MA TESOL intake to another, depending on new developments, availability of staff, and so on. You also take all of these. This means that, in all, you follow eight modules and write a dissertation.
Two modules on your programme are non-credit-bearing. One is the Foundation Module. As its name suggests, this is intended to provide you with basic training for MA level work, and we do not feel that it needs to be assessed in a formal way. The second is the Research Methods module, which prepares you for the dissertation. So, although you follow eight modules on the programme, only six of them are assessed and credit-bearing.
Please note that work from previous academic courses can be accredited in order to receive exemption for up to 2 modules, subject to the nature of the evidence submitted. The MA TESOL course fee will be reduced by 10% per module for which accreditation is given. Applications for accreditation can only be entertained after enrolment onto the programme.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
