Location of Lancaster University

Reflecting its status as one of the top 10 universities in the UK (according to the 2011 Times, Independent and Guardian University Guides) Lancaster University is firmly committed to postgraduate study, demonstrated by its lively and cosmopolitan Graduate School of nearly 3,000 students. People come to study, and teach, at Lancaster from all over the world - about 90 different nationalities are represented on campus. Lancaster offers a safe, attractive and well designed campus, with a purpose-built graduate college situated in close proximity to some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside.

PPR is part of an exceptionally strong Arts and Social Sciences Faculty at Lancaster University with a large number of leading scholars attracting a lively and diverse postgraduate intake. In PPR we have over 35 academic staff applying world class expertise to understanding and solving some of the 21st century’s major challenges in the areas of Politics, International Relations, Philosophy and Religious Studies.

The MA programmes in PPR are based upon - depending on the specific programme - a combination of advanced level taught courses, self-directed supervised study, and a substantial dissertation. They are usually taken full-time over one year, but may also be taken on a part-time basis over two years. The MA is a widely recognised qualification in its own right, providing advanced training beyond first degree level, and also prepares students for the more intensive research of the PhD programme.

This programme consists of five taught modules and a dissertation of 20,000 words. Each taught module counts for 20 credits and is usually assessed by a 5,000 word essay. The programme can be taken either in a full-time mode (completed in 12 months) or as a part-time degree.

Requirements

Entry Requirements

Our current and past MA students have taken on the challenge of this level of study for a range of reasons:

* Some intend to go on to study for a PhD or MPhil and see the MA as a necessary first step to engage with specific questions and develop their ability in research.
* Some simply want to study a range of philosophical questions in more depth than in their undergraduate studies.

For success in the MA in Philosophy we normally look for a good single or combined undergraduate degree in philosophy (although on occasion we admit people with a good first degree in an allied discipline). We are also anxious to take appropriate account of other qualifications or work-experience that equip a person for advanced study in this field.

English Language Qualifications

We accept a range of English Language qualifications including:

* IELTS (British Council) min 6.5
* TOEFL min 237 (computer-based) or 93 (internet-based)
* Cambridge Certificate of min grade C

Proficiency in English

* A recent GCSE min grade C

Additional Requirements

Minimal degree required: Bachelor's degree
Minimal amount of work experience Not specified

Language Proficiency

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): Grade B (Score: 75)
