PhD programmes are based on individual research projects that last 3 or 4 years, working with a specific academic supervisor (principle investigators). Applicants are specifically matched with a principle investigator based on their research interests and background.
Biomolecular Sciences covers a broad interdisciplinary area of research including molecular biology, cell biology, bioinformatics, structural biology and the application of chemical & physical methods to biological systems. Bioinformatics applies computational, mathematical and statistical approaches to the study of biological systems. Structural biology bridges the important gap between linear genomic information and the function of macromolecules in the cell. The construction of a complete chemical model for the living cells is one of the major challenges in the post-genomic area. Recent research projects have included:
Isolation and Characterisation of Normal and Leukaemic Primitive Haematopoietic Stem Cells;
Analysis of the Posttranscriptional Control of Eukaryotic Gene Expression;
Development of Novel Approaches for Bioinformatics, Genomes and Proteomics;
Alzheimers Disease Research;
Hepatitis C Virus Biology
Studies of the Malaria Parasite.
