Why apply for the Masters in Operational Research and Management Science?
The Lancaster Masters in Operational Research and Management Science (OR & MS) is ideal for you if you wish to work in business analytics, decision support, industrial engineering, operational research and management science. It has run at Lancaster for over 40 years. The employment record of the programme is excellent, with graduates in demand from business and the public sector for their analytical skills. Who is it for?
You should have, or be expecting, a first degree that includes some mathematics and statistics; for example, science, engineering, business studies or economics, as well as mathematics or statistics. Under the EPSRC Master’s Training Grant scheme we offer funding to well-qualified applicants.
What will I study?
The MSc in OR & MS is a flexible degree scheme in which you choose subjects that interest you and also attend compulsory core modules. The programme prepares you to use your analytical skills in decision support and planning. In today’s fast moving world, customers and citizens expect high-quality services and products that are appropriate to their needs; therefore organisations must think through their decisions before acting. You will study methods of proven value for decision support.
Will it prepare me for work?
The taught element of the programme includes modules that help you to improve your professional skills as well as your analytical abilities. The taught modules end in May and are followed by a significant real life project that runs until mid-September. In this, you will develop professional skills by working for 16 weeks as a consultant to one of our client companies, whilst being supervised by a member of staff. This is an excellent preparation for the world of work.
What about further study?
The MSc in OR & MS can also serve as a springboard for further study for a PhD.
Contents
The MSc in Operational Research and Management Science consists of compulsory and optional courses, plus a project. The compulsory courses ensure that you have a firm grounding in important subjects. The wide range of optional courses allows you to specialise in subjects that particularly interest you.
Phase I
Runs from October to December through the winter term and consists of four compulsory modules, worth a total of 50 credits:
* MSCI 505: Problem Solving & Consulting Skills
* MSCI 514: Spreadsheet Modelling Skills
* MSCI 521: Introductory Statistics
* MSCI 569: Management Science in Supply Chain and Marketing Contexts
Phase II
Runs from January to mid-May, through the spring term and for part of the summer term. You choose 70 credits, with at least 40 from the following five modules:
* MSCI 504: Problem Structuring (10 credits)
* MSCI 512: Computer Simulation (10 credits)
* MSCI 523: Forecasting (10 credits)
* MSCI 532: Stochastic Modelling (10 credits)
* MSCI 534: Optimisation & Heuristics (10 credits)
You choose 30 credits from the following modules:
* MSCI 515: Software Support for Logistics & SCM (10 credits)
* MSCI 525: SAS for Data Analysis and Modelling (5 credits)
* MSCI 526: Data Mining for Marketing, Sales and Finance (10 credits)
* MSCI 541: Manufacturing Management (10 credits)
* MSCI 542: Public Sector Analysis (10 credits)
* MSCI 543: Marketing Analysis & Modelling (5 credits)
* MSCI 544: Logistics (10 credits)
* MSCI 548: Revenue Management (5 credits)
* Any of MSCI 504, 512, 523, 532 or 534 if not already taken.
Phase III
After the taught courses, you work on a 60 credit project, usually based in an organisation, on which you write a dissertation.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirement for the MSc in Operational Research and Management Science, the MSc in Management Science and Market Analysis and the MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management is normally a first or good second class honours degree in a quantitative subject. Students with first degrees in mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering and management science are regularly admitted, and applicants from other disciplines who can show evidence of quantitative problem solving skills are encouraged to apply.
English Language
If their previous education has not been conducted in the English language, applicants will be required to sit either the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test conducted by the British Council, and achieve a balanced overall score of at least 7.0; or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and achieve a score of at least 600, a CBTOEFL of at least 250 and a iBTOEFL of at least 100.
If your standard of English does not quite meet these requirements, the University runs pre-sessional English language courses.
