This programme provides the opportunity for students to acquire a greater understanding of practical and theoretical biomedical science. We place particular emphasis on the molecules and mechanisms fundamental to life processes and how these are disrupted by disease. Unlike many biomedically-based MSc courses which only consider one specific area within biomedicine, our course offers a diverse range of topics to provide you with a solid appreciation of many areas of this modern branch of science

You will have the opportunity to acquire subject specific knowledge through research informed teaching in lectures, workshops and practicals. In particular you will acquire authoritative subject-specific knowledge on one particular topic through the completion of a substantial research project in a biomedical area. The course is intended to provide the knowledge and skills for subsequent progression to PhD study, a career in biomedical/pharmaceutical research (industry or university based) or hospital-based employment.

Our scheme is designed to provide focus and training within several `hot´ topics in biomedicine whilst still retaining elements of flexibility and choice. The MSc in Biomedicine consists of four compulsory modules (Immunology, Microbes and Disease, Diseases of the Brain and Visual System, Molecular Basis of Cancer) plus a supervised research project. In addition you can choose up to two optional modules from a variety of other biomedical modules offered within Biology, Health, Physics and Maths plus postgraduate training modules in key skills. Staff from Morecambe Bay NHS Trust contribute a clinical perspective within our programme.

On completion of the MSc it is expected that you will have the following skills and knowledge:-

* An appreciation of the wide diversity of biomedical research and its ultimate application to human health and disease.

* In depth knowledge of specific examples of where biochemical and cell biological processes are disrupted in the human body, leading to disease states

* Understanding of the principles of biomedical ethics and their application.

* Practical experience of cutting edge techniques. The research project provides the opportunity for closer staff-student interactions where experience of first-hand application and assessment of techniques and results will be gained within an excellent research environment.

* The ability to interpret data and observations in a biomedical context. The ability to develop a robust scientific argument, formulate and test hypotheses, and to assess contrasting scientific theories.

* Experience in problem solving and decision making, identifying, abstracting, critically evaluating and synthesizing relevant (scientific-technical) information.

* Self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, acting autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level.

* A portfolio of key employment skills including IT literacy, presentation skills, numeracy, the capacity for critical thinking, knowledge of how to apply for research funding, knowledge of how to plan and develop a career path.
