Location of Lancaster University

The department of Biological Sciences currently has the facility to take students into its research laboratories for an MSc in Biomedicine based purely on a full time research project. The scheme aims to provide a means by which students can gain an in depth knowledge of a particular area of biomedical research and become familiar with general and specific research methods and laboratory practice. This is achieved by 9 months full time work in a laboratory as part of an established research group and some direct learnings of research methods by participation in the graduate training programme. This is followed by a 3 month writing up period, when a thesis will be produced, which will be the means by which the degree is assessed.

The principle areas of current research that can be used as the focus for this degree are:

* DNA damage induction and repair in relation to cancer predisposition and treatment - Prof T J McMillan
* Biochemistry and genetics of DNA repair processes - Dr F E Benson
* Connective tissue structure and organisation - Dr G M Brown
* Signal transduction pathways in leukaemogenesis - Dr J Owen-Lynch
* Biochemical basis of neurodegenerative diseases - Dr D Allsop
* Structural biochemistry of cornea and cartilage - Prof I A Nieduszynski
* Corneal structure and eye diseases - Dr N J Fullwood
* Cell biology of parasitic protozoa - Dr Paul McKean
* Cell cycle control/DNA repair in yeast - Dr Clive Price
* Food-poisoning and indicator bacteria in the environment - Dr K Jones
* Proteoglycans and ageing - Dr R Lauder
* The genetic control of cell proliferation and death. Peptide signalling in reproduction - Dr A D Shirras
