Location of Lancaster University

At Lancaster, we offer a high quality of engineering education recognised by the award of "excellent" in Teaching Quality. All of Lancaster's Engineering degree programmes are accredited by either the Institution of Electrical Engineers or the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The atmosphere at Lancaster is friendly and informal, with staff and students working as a team to produce engineers of the future. We believe in providing a "hands-on" experience to give you a real confidence in your ability to develop new skills. The vast majority of our graduates find well-paid jobs in engineering or engineering management.

This course has been designed for engineers working, or aspiring to do so, in the nuclear decommissioning industry. The syllabus is a unique combination of Engineering, Safety and Environmental material necessary to empower engineers across a broad range of disciplines associated with legacy facilities. The taught aspects of the course draw on research-based expertise from the Departments of Engineering and Environmental Science and on industry-based expertise plus contributions from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and regulatory bodies.

Format and Assessment

The course is of two year's duration and is part-time industrial; students attend six one-week taught modules. Following each module students complete a piece of assigned group coursework before embarking on the next module in six weeks time. The coursework is carried out in teams of five or six students and the teams form study/mentoring groups for the duration of the course. Formal examinations are taken in three modules per year in the summer and throughout the course a long individual project is undertaken which is assessed by dissertation and technical paper. The subject of the project will most often be relevant to the student's workplace activities and the majority of the practical aspects of the project may indeed draw on workplace duties. The coursework, examinations and project are assessed in 25:35:40 proportion, respectively. Modules are taught at Lancaster University and at the Westlakes facilities in West Cumbria.
