Mechanical engineering is the basis of just about anything that has movable parts - which includes areas like transport (automotive, railway, aerospace), renewable energy, medicine and manufacturing. These areas will continue to be very important to the UK economy, and indeed to all developed economies.

The taught part of this course consists of modules covering system design and modelling, mechanics, control, CAD/CAM, and renewable-energy resources and devices. You take 6 modules and undertake a major individual project. The project allows you to extend your knowledge by exploring more fully an area that especially interests you.

Contents

The course consists of six taught modules and an individual mechanical research project. The
taught modules are taken in the period October to March (over two years for part-time students) and
examined in April/May. For full-time students, one of the six taught modules is an industrial
Linking Project.
The individual mechanical research project normally runs throughout the course. For full-time
students, the third term and summer vacation are totally dedicated to the project, which is assessed
by a dissertation submitted in September.
The Postgraduate Diploma comprises the same taught modules as the MSc, but a less demanding
project. The Diploma course is of 9 months duration.
The part-time MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is taken over two years. The
mechanical research project is to be related to the student’s industry-based work. The Linking
Project is replaced by one module of equal weight chosen from other 4th-year undergraduate or MSc
taught courses, as agreed with the Director of Studies.
Modules
501 Design and modelling of systems
504 Mechanics and actuators
506 Intelligent system control
509 Renewable energy

530 Linking project (full-time students only)
Part-time students have a free module chosen from another MSc courses, such as Mechatronics,Safety Engineering, Decommissioning etc.
