Location of Lancaster University

At Lancaster, we offer a high quality of engineering education recognised by the award of "excellent" in Teaching Quality. All of Lancaster's Engineering degree programmes are accredited by either the Institution of Electrical Engineers or the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The atmosphere at Lancaster is friendly and informal, with staff and students working as a team to produce engineers of the future. We believe in providing a "hands-on" experience to give you a real confidence in your ability to develop new skills. The vast majority of our graduates find well-paid jobs in engineering or engineering management.

All of Lancaster's Engineering degree programmes are accredited.

Engineers qualified in mechatronics are in great demand worldwide. The course has been designed to meet this need by raising and broadening the capability of engineers and scientists in industry who wish to be key players in systems integration.

The taught modules cover system design, embedded computer systems, sensors, actuators, robotics, mechanics, system integration, interfacing and intelligent control. Students take 6 modules and undertake a major individual project. The project allows students to extend their knowledge by exploring more fully an area that especially interests them.

Course Structure

The course consists of five taught modules selected from the list below, a linking project and an individual project and dissertation.

* Design and Modelling of Systems
* Embedded Systems (knowledge of C or C++ is advisable)
* Mechanics and Actuators
* Interfacing and Integration
* Intelligent System Control
* DCS Real-time SystemsSmart Sensors
* Advanced CAD/CAM

These are taught between October and April and are interleaved with laboratory work to build an understanding of the application of the theory learned. It is expected that students will select the first module as this provides the essential 'systems' content of the course which is developed in the other modules. The modules are assessed by coursework and examination

The linking project is a distinctive feature of the Lancaster course. This is to assess student's understanding of the taught elements of the course. Students work in small groups on a realistic project brief that is arranged to take them through the design and evaluation of a mechatronic product or process in conjunction with an industrial company.

From December students undertake a project within the University. This may be for a local industrial company or related to ongoing research within the Department. It is likely that following the assessment module students will work within the sponsoring company.

The final assessment of the students is through a dissertation based upon their project work.
