Contaminated land is a world-wide problem and represents a significant threat to the environment, ecosystem functioning and to human health and our society as a whole. It has been estimated that 3.5 million sites may be potentially contaminated in Europe, with 0.5 million sites needing remediation with estimated total annual costs caused by soil contamination of approximately17.3 billion euros.
This Masters programme covers many aspects of risk assessment and remediation and is supported by a strong research base providing highly contemporary material. Case studies are used extensively to illustrate the application of the taught material and specifically include detailed investigationsinto the risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land sites. This MSc uniquely combines academically driven researchers with end-user practitioners from the local authority and industry and enables the transfer of key skills to the user community, such as the Environment Agency, local authorities and environmental consultancies.
After completion of the degree, you will be aware of the scale of contaminated land problems in the UK and beyond; be appraised of the changes in legislation pertaining to and the processes used to access the risk associated with contaminated land; be able to scientifically discuss the processes which control the behaviour of chemicals in soil and comment on the processes, which may affect remediation, and be able to communicate in an informed manner about methods of assessment and remediation of contaminated land. This MSc programme is specifically designed to offer a scientific and technical grounding for those wishing to seek careers in consultancy and with regulatory organisations concerned with contaminated land risk assessment and remediation.
