If you are concerned by the many environmental and human crises we currently face as a global society, and hope to join expanding efforts to seek solutions to these challenges, then this Masters (MRes) programme in Environmental and Development could be for you. What were once separate concerns about environmental quality and human well-being are now seen as linked. One cannot imagine safeguarding the planet's ecosystems without dealing with the many who live under the shadow of war and extreme poverty. One consequence is an ever-growing demand for researchers and practitioners with expertise in relevant skills for understanding, analysing and solving complex environment-development problems.
The MRes at Lancaster is one of the few postgraduate courses in both environment and development. The coursecombines top-quality theoretical enquiry and hands-on, project-focused fieldwork. This equips students to work on pressing issues linking environmental quality and human well-being. Students have undertaken placements in for example, Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Trinidad, Jamacia, Bolivia, Taiwan, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya and Belize.
The course willprovide you with:
State-of the-art interdisciplinary theoretical approaches to bothdevelopment and environment, designed to stimulate thought, provoke debate and develop key professional skills:practical training in fieldwork techniques, including research design and data interpretations skills.
The MRes covers a wide range of topics such as:theories of development; ecological identities and new social movemnts; global governance and international developmental policy frameworks; conservation and culture; gender and globalisation.
