The Master's Program in Canadian Studies started out in 1997 as a joint graduate program developed by the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Science, and the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work. The program benefited from the ongoing support of the International Council for Canadian Studies, the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest.

The program shares the objectives of the Romanian Centre for Canadian Studies (CREC -Centre Roumain d'Études Canadiennes), established in 1996:

Ø to manage change in the post-Communist Romanian society by adopting Canadian economic and societal models;

Ø to stimulate research on topics of current interest, such as communication science, inter-ethnic and multicultural studies;

Ø to develop the students' creativity and critical thinking by action learning and interdisciplinary research.

The main aim of the program is to train specialists in Canadian studies for careers in research, teaching, advisory positions as experts in the field.
