In this programme, we aim to develop students’ knowledge of the psychology of language, speech and auditory processing. You will acquire advanced knowledge of the theories and major findings in this field, and develop expertise in the methods and analytic techniques used in research. The dissertation is an important component of the course, in which you will develop your own original psychological research project under expert supervision.

The course is aimed at graduates who:

* wish to progress to a PhD in child language development, psycholinguistics or psychoacoustics,
* wish to boost their research skills en route to speech and language therapy, audiology, or clinical or educational psychology training,
* have already qualified as speech and language therapists or audiologists, or clinical or educational psychologists, but wish to enhance their research skills before entering the job market,
* require additional knowledge about language, speech or hearing to apply to their work environment.

The degree builds on the Department’s research specialities in this area, with core material from course team members who specialise in:

* The psychology and physiology of hearing
* The development of speech perception
* Language and literacy development
* Child language disorders

Additional input will come from other members of the Psychology Department, the Department of Linguistics and English Language, Audiologists and Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs).

Students are given the opportunity to explore both basic and applied areas of Language, Speech and Hearing.

We adopt a range of teaching methods

combining small group tuition with innovative, student-led teaching methods, and the use of diagnostic teaching software.
