The Post-graduate Certificate in Minimal Access Surgery is a taught programme that provides basic and intermediate level training in minimal access surgery using a combination of didactic learning opportunities and integrated fresh cadaveric and virtual reality simulator based practical training. The programme aims to provide health-care professionals with an interest in surgery as a career, or surgeons wishing to specialise, the knowledge and skills required to plan and treat a range of surgical conditions by minimal access surgery.
All training will take place at the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre (NSTC) at Newcastle´s Freeman Hospital. As the first unit in the UK of its kind to be licensed by the Human Tissue Authority, the centre provides state-of-the-art training facilities for the development of laparoscopic skills in a `wet-lab´ environment. Since its opening in September 2007, the NSTC has achieved both national and international recognition and is acknowledged as a key player in the drive to improve the safety and delivery of new, near-patient technology.
You take two core modules (30 credits each) in: introductory theory and basic skills in minimal access surgery; and techniques and intermediate skills in minimal access surgery.
Each module is the equivalent to 300 hours of notional study time. Study time includes time spent in seminars and workshops, preparatory reading, private research and study of the learning materials, practical sessions on the virtual reality simulators or cadavers and preparation for assessment.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
