This is course keeps pace with advances in renewable energy technologies, placing special emphasis on electricity generation and the integration of resources into utility networks. It incorporates the best European practice by involving internationally acknowledged experts from universities, research institutions and industry.
An optional (non-examinable) foundation course at the beginning of the first semester is available to refresh students’ knowledge of electrical engineering and fluid mechanics. The course then begins with a common first term of modules that includes laboratory and group work. The second semester provides modules on the Integration of Renewables and advanced wind and solar specialisations. A major individual research project, often in collaboration with industry, is carried out in the final four months.
The UK’s premier professional Engineering Institutions (IET, IMechE and Energy Institute) have approved the MSc in Renewable Energy Systems Technology as Further Learning Requirements of the Engineering Council’s UK SPEC. This means that graduates who have already completed accredited 3-year undergraduate degrees can use satisfactory completion of the programme as a direct route to Chartered Engineering status.
