This Master's programme in medical education at Karolinska Institutet is designed for individuals who want to better prepare for academic and educational leadership roles, supervision and teaching. Healthcare professionals, teachers, leaders and educational developers who work within a medical faculty or the health care sector are welcome to apply.

The programme provides advanced education in strategies and methods that stimulate and guide the learning processes of students, academics, professionals and patients alike. Participants will study the significance of teaching and learning in health care, for example, considering the patient, professional development, integration of basic science and practice, rapid development in medical research, advances in technology and also challenges of working in teams. The development of a scholarly approach to own practice is encouraged. This includes exploring existing knowledge, investigating, developing, changing, evaluating, and publishing results, which can be summarised within the concept 'Scholarship of Medical Education'.

The Master´s programme in medical education prepares participants to design and lead evidence-based learning opportunities and programmes, followed by the development of effective forms of assessment. Participants also develop core competencies in programme evaluation, research and evaluation, educational change, simulation and leadership skills. The curriculum is designed to make use of the participants´ own work practice to develop relevant material that can be shared with course participants, culminating in a final master project thesis.

Courses

Term 1

Scholarship of Medical Education (4ME000)

The aim of the course is for the participants to develop a reflective approach and an understanding for how the process of scholarship as a model can be a way to support one's own development. Participants will gain a better understanding of the scholarship of medical education.

Learning Processes (4ME001)

The course aims to improve the participants' orientation in the field of medical education and its pedagogy. Participants will develop their ability to analyse individuals' learning from the perspective of the learner, based on personal experience, theories of education, and based on research in medical and higher education.

Term 2

Integration of Theory and Practice (4ME002)

The course aims to depeen the participants' knowledge of how individuals process information, construct understanding and develop skills, attitudes and values when developing professional competence.

Design and Assessment of Learning (4ME003)

The course aim to develop the participants' understanding for how to design activities that facilitate meaningful learning. The course takes the teacher's/educator's perspective as a point of departure. Design for learning is a central theme and the course will touch upon course design as well as other activities in different contexts. Course participants should also develop the ability to analyse learning from a design perspective and continue to develop a scholarly approach to their own practie. The course builds on the knowledge and skills that participants have acquired during previous courses in the programme.

Term 3

Interprofessional Learning (4ME004)

The aim of the course is that participants develop their understanding of and ability to design courses and activities that facilitate interprofessional learning for students and/or members of different health care professions.

Leading Change and Learning (4ME005)

The aim of the course is to help the participants develop the skills and understanding that are required to create a learning organisation when leading change and development work and learning in their workplace. The course builds on preceding courses in the programme with the opportunity for participant creativity in the application of his or her educational skills in practice.

Term 4

Degree Project in Medical Education 1 (4ME006)

The aim of the degree project is for participants to develop the ability to independently implement a project with a systematic and scientific approach that clearly demonstrates scholarship in medical teaching and learning. The participants should - in accordance with the scholarship model (see supplement) - carry out, document and spread knowledge of a project that connects to their own practice and also one of the four possible main themes of the programme: academic leadership, educational development work, professional development or subject didactics within medicine or health care.

Term 5

Research in Medical Education (4ME008)

The aim of the course: The participants should develop their scientific approach and understand the implications of current research fields in medical education. By building on the first year studies the participants’ preparedness for Scholarship in medical teaching and learning should develop into a preparedness towards research in medical education.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree or a professional degree equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor’s degree of at least 180 credits and at least two years work experience within the medical, caring, or behavioural sciences, and/or two years teaching experience (at upper secondary level or higher). Proficiency in the English language should be documented by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL: internet based (iBT) with a total score of at least 90 and minimum score of 20 in written test, paper based (PBT) with a total score of at least 575, and minimum score of 4.5 in written test, or IELTS (academic) with an overall mark of at least 6.5 and no band less than 5.5; or other documentation that according to regulations certifies the equivalence of English B at Swedish upper secondary school.
