The programme provides a broad understanding of the principles of librarianship and information work, of the organisation and management of libraries and other information agencies, and of the handling, storage and retrieval of information in all media. The programme is in two parts: taught modules and a dissertation. Teaching emphasises the practical development of skills as well as the exploration of theoretical concepts. We teach research methods and provide one-to-one supervision throughout the dissertation period.

Assessment
MA/MSc: coursework and dissertation. The dissertation involves supervised, but self-directed, study.

Minimum lower second class honours degree or equivalent in any subject and work experience in a library or information service (length of experience negotiable). Applicants must meet the Department’s minimum English language requirements.
All applicants must have an acceptable qualification in English language before they can be admitted to any postgraduate programme. Below are the main English language qualifications acceptable for entry to the University (these are the minimum and some departments may require higher levels):
* GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
* IELTS band 6.5 or above with 6.5 in listening, 7.0 in writing, 6.0 in reading and 6.0 in speaking
* TOEFL (including the Tests in Written and Spoken Practice) minimum score of 100 (Internet-based test) with a minimum 21 in Listening, 22 in Reading, 23 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.
