Engineering is not just about technology. It is about people, companies, manufacturing and commerce. Engineering decisions must normally be made within a commercial context and engineers are often found in senior management positions where they are required to be leaders and strategic planners as well as problem-solvers and designers. Combining engineering with management produces a lively, interesting and multi-disciplinary degree, with excellent career prospects for graduates.

The programmes begin with the common first year, which provides the basic knowledge and skills which are applicable to all engineering, such as mechanics, thermo-fluids, materials, mechatronics, communications, design and mathematics, in a novel and challenging active learning environment.

In Year 2 you begin to specialise in Mechanical Engineering. You complete four blocks of engineering applications where you will be presented with specialist material in your chosen area and tackle design-related problems. You will also learn much about the commercial and ethical constraints placed on engineers by the business world.

In Year 3 and Year 4, half of the specialist units you attend will be management related. You will complete a group design project and an individual research project which will be engineering based, but with a business angle. You will choose from a range of optional units. In Year 4 you will undertake a business oriented group project. As well as specialist management and strategy units, there is the opportunity to study a wide range of options which may include machine tools, management, manufacturing, materials, processes, mathematics, micro-mechanics, modelling & simulation, plant monitoring, power plant, environment and many others. You emerge as a well-rounded graduate with, not only a solid engineering training, but also a useful insight into the commercial world, which will equip you for a wide range of careers including general management and sales, as well as jobs in more technical fields.
