This programme will give you an understanding of the philosophical principles that underpin social inquiry and also equip you with the ability to integrate material across a range of disciplines.

Compulsory modules (70 credits) typically include: sociological thought and explanation; social divisions and inequalities; being, belonging and identity; thinking about research; cities, economies, cultures; nature of explanation and enquiry; methodologies: researching media, culture and society. Optional modules (50 credits) may cover: comparative perspectives in social and environmental change; politics of global change; war, terrorism and peace; specialist study in sociology; media analysis; globalisation and culture; and qualitative and quantitative methodologies. You also complete a dissertation (60 credits) which will allow you to develop your ability to design, execute and write up a piece of original research in sociology.

Requirements

Normally an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree or higher, or an international equivalent in the following (or related) discipline areas: sociology; social policy; criminology; organisational studies; cultural studies; media studies; film studies; human geography; politics; gender studies and health studies. Applicants who hold non-standard qualifications, and/or have an appropriate level of relevant experience, will be encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based) or equivalent.
