This programme is designed to help you understand the concepts, methods, tools and applications of modern economic analysis, combining rigorous coverage of economic principles (macroeconomics and microeconomics) and quantitative skills, research training and specialisation in various fields of economics and finance.

The following MSc named awards are normally available as pathways.

* MSc in Economics and Econometrics
* MSc in International Economics

Well-trained, numerate economists are in high demand in every sector. These programmes prepare students for careers as professional economists in banking, education, finance, Government or industry, and for higher awards by research.

Semester 1

Compulsory Modules * Macroeconomics

* Mathematical & Econometric Methods
* Techniques & Topics in Economic Analysis

Semester 2
Compulsory Modules * Financial Econometrics and/or Microeconometrics

Semester 2 (choose up to 3) * Applied Banking and Financial Modelling
* Comparative Banking
* International Finance
* Monetary Theory and Policy
* Development Finance
* Game Theory
* Trade Theory & Policy

In addition, one of two other named pathways may be chosen.

* MSc in International Economics

(Options must include Trade, Theory and Policy and International Finance plus a dissertation from international economics)

* MSc in Economics and Econometrics

(Options must include Financial Econometrics and Microeconometrics plus a dissertation from an area of applied econometrics).

Choice of Semester 2 modules may be restricted by the options selected in Semester 1. The Department reserves the right to vary the list of optional modules. Option lists are published in September and January each year.

Summer Period
Students satisfy the research requirement of the MSc by dissertation.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Good UK honours degree (upper second class) in Economics or joint honours in Economics. Where the UK honours system is not used, substantial economics content is required with high grades. Candidates without these qualifications should apply for one of the other programmes offered by the department.

Acceptable English language qualification

* GCSE English Language - Grade C or above
* IELTS band 6.5 with not less than 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
* TOEFL (including the Tests in Written and Spoken Practice) minimum score of 600 (paper-based test) or 100 (Internet-based test) with specific requirements for sub tests
