The Department of Politics, History and International Relations (PHIR) provides an excellent environment for postgraduate study. The Department ranks very highly for the quality of its teaching (23/24) and research (5/5), and for student satisfaction with the standard of its courses. Our staff includes experts internationally renowned in their field, and the Department has many associates and friends in organisations in Europe and beyond. The Dept. of Politics, History and International Relations is also a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, in recognition of our track record in teaching and research into European integration.

Masters students who choose the Dept. of Politics, History and International Relations will find themselves enjoying teaching in small classes with ample opportunity to interact with other students and with staff, and to develop a range of academic and personal skills. They can partake in the Department´s lively research agenda of seminars, colloquia and student-led presentations. The Department is committed to the internationalisation of its postgraduate curriculum, and plans student exchange opportunities with our partner institutions in other EU member states.

The Department of Politics, History and International Relations offers a number of taught postgraduate programmes. All are offered on both a full-time and a part-time basis, with the full-time course taking 12 months and the part-time course 27 months. As well as the full Masters award, on all programmes we also offer a Postgraduate Diploma (9 months full-time; 21 months part-time). Students satisfactorily completing modules worth 120 credits may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma. In addition, the Postgraduate Certificate may be awarded to students satisfactorily completing modules worth 60 credits.

This programme aims to provide training in research methodology, including both comprehensive training in various qualitative and quantitative methods, and in the application of those methods.


Contents

Compulsory Modules
(all modules are compulsory unless specific exemption is given)

Semester 1

* Research Design 1: Principles of Research Strategy and Design
* Qualitative Methods and Analysis 1
* Quantitative Methods and Analysis 1: Basic Approaches
* Effective Management of Research 1: Principles

The above modules are designed to provide basic training in skills and techniques and are provided by the Department of Social Sciences.

Semester 2

* Research Design in European and International Settings
* Qualitative Methods in European and International Settings
* Quantitative Methods in European and International Settings
* Research Management in European and International Settings

These modules provide more advanced and focused training in the specific problems of research conducted in European and international contexts.

Assessment
A combination of essays, reports, individual and group exercises and presentations. Dissertation (compulsory): 12,000-15,000 words.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant social science discipline (Politics, International Relations, European Studies, History, Economics, Human Geography). Applicants without the above are dealt with on a case by case basis.

* GCSE English Language - Grade C or above
* IELTS band 7.0 with not less than 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
* TOEFL (including the Tests in Written and Spoken Practice) minimum score of 110 (Internet-based test) with specific requirements for sub tests
