Program Description
Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field in which the principles of engineering are applied to solving problems in biology or medicine. It applies quantitative, analytical, and integrative methods from the molecular level to that of the whole organism. This broadens our understanding of basic biological processes and enables us to develop innovative approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program at the FH Aachen / University of Applied Sciences, Jülich Campus prepares students to apply engineering concepts to scientific and practical problems in biology, medicine, and health care.
The Master's program contains five study fields:
- Artificial Organs / Cardiovascular Engineering
- Biomechanics
- Biophysics
- Chemical Sensors & Biosensors
- Medical Informatics
Some of the subjects taught in the Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering program include:
- Artificial Organs
- Biomechanics of the Locomotion System
- Cell Biophysics
- Cell Culture Technology & Medical Biotechnology
- Computer Modelling & Dynamic Systems
- Continuum Mechanics
- Lasers in Biology & Medicine
- Medical Imaging
- Medical Statistics
- Molecular Biology & Genetics
- Selected Examples of Chemical Sensors & Biosensors
Program Description
The Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering curriculum is modular and based on the European Credit Point Transfer System (ECTS). Each module consists of 9 to 10 classroom hours per week of lectures, tutorials, practical and computer work, for a total of 10 ECTS Points for the 15 week semester.
Students must register for at least 3 modules per semester to receive 30 ECTS points, the intended study volume for one semester. The time schedule for the modules is very flexible and facilities cooperation with other universities, thus also permitting students to study part time.
Study Focus
* Artificial Organs / Cardiovascular Engineering
* Biomechanics
* Biophysics
* Chemical Sensors and Biosensors
* Medical Informatics
Start of the Program
The academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters. The Master's program starts in the summer semester (each year in March). It is not possible to begin in the winter semester.
First semester:
* Mainly bridging courses to bring all students to an equivalent basic scientific level.
Second semester:
* Specialized study curriculum with required and elective courses.
Starting in the second semester, students have the opportunity to select specialized modules, depending on their fields of interest:
* Artificial Organs and Cardiovascular Engineering
* Biomechanics, Biophysics and Medical Physics
* Biosensors and Chemical Sensors
* Medical Informatics
Third semester:
* Specialized study curriculum with required and elective courses.
Fourth semester:
* Master's thesis project
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
