The European Studies programme is a two-year interdisciplinary postgraduate programme taught in English. It is intended for full-time students and open to all graduates meeting the entrance requirements.
The study programme is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach: it combines Political Science and the study of International Relations with History and Cultural Sciences and gives an in-depth insight into relevant European themes from the point of view of Social Sciences (Sociology, Economics, and Political Sciences) and Modern History.
The programme focuses on the study of the territory of Europe and on the European integration process in all its complexity and variety. The programme deals not only with individual European countries, member states of the EU and its regions, but also with the European integration process with the focus mainly on its current development influenced by two features: the enlargement and deepening of the European integration process. It studies the theoretical basis, the origins and development of European integration, EU institutions and their development with particular attention paid to the institutional reform and its consequences for the functioning of the EU and EU member states. It also studies the political and decision-making system and other law, economical and cultural aspects of the European integration. Theoretically, its primary focus is on the process of division of powers and the exercise of multi-level governance. Particular attention is paid to the role and position of Central European states in the EU.
Graduates of the Master´s Programme European Studies will be professionals in the field of European Politics, Economics, International Relations and History. They will be able to analyze individual topics arising within Europe from a multidisciplinary point of view in terms of Social Sciences (Sociology, Economics, and Political Sciences) and Modern History. Programme graduates will be experts not only on individual questions of the European integration process in its historical dynamics, but will also be able to analyze the process of the creation of the European integration, the development of European politics, the activities of European institutions and the functioning of the EU as a "sui generis" system, and in relation to EU member states. During the course of studies the emphasis will be on, among others, on Modern History, so that the students are competent to assess the development of European events in a broader historical-political context, deduce the consequences for the current events and point out the possible risks and developmental trends in the developed world. Thanks to a systematic focus on academic writing, graduates will be capable of completing analytical studies of a high professional and formal quality. It expected that programme graduates will become highly-skilled employees in the civil service and diplomacy, in EU institutions as well as in other international organizations, private companies and the media. They will be well prepared for a variety of academic pursuits and will possess a wide range of knowledge and skills required in various social science fields.
