The Master of Arts in Public Affairs and Political Communication is a one-year full time programme combining lectures, project work, the production of an academic dissertation and internship with a view to preparing students for a successful career in public affairs and political communication.

This is a taught full time post-graduate programme of twelve months duration including the submission of a dissertation of original research on a relevant subject. The programme also involves a placed internship of up to fifteen hours a week, in a public, private and not for profit organisations engaged in public affairs, including Seanad Eireann. Possession of a laptop personal computer will be a pre-requisite of the programme.

Award Graduates of this course are eligible for the award of Master of Arts in Public Affairs and Political Communications from the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Career Opportunities Graduates are equipped to take up full-time employment as liaisons between private, public and not-for-profit organisations and governmental or political persons and organisations. They may also provide communication services for those working in the political environment at regional, national and European level. Some graduates may take on employment as consultants offering public affairs services.

Assessment Assessment is undertaken through examinations at the end of each semester in January and May, through project work and class presentations and by means of continual assessment.
The submission of an academic dissertation of between ten and twenty thousand words at the completion of the course in September accounts for thirty per cent of the marks associated with the course.

Requirements

Entry is confined to holders of an honours degree (2.2 grade or higher).

Prospective candidates should complete an application form for this course either on-line or by post from the Office of Graduate Studies at DIT. Qualified applicants may be invited for interview. Selection is based on the candidates understanding of and motivation for a career in public relations. Those completing their primary degree this year may be offered a place subject to attaining a 2:2 honours degree.

Possession of a laptop personal computer will be a pre-requisite of the programme.

Note: Due to the considerable competition for our postgraduate programmes satisfying the minimum entry requirement is not a guarantee of a place. Depending on the programme of study applications will be assessed based on your academic grades and may also take into account your work/life experience. Applicants may also be required to attend for interview for specific programmes.
