This programme provides an alternative path into a career in law. It also should interest those considering careers outside law, in which law plays an important part.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Law aims to provide an integrated programme in the practice and theory of law, supported by lectures, tutorials, coursework and research projects. The academic foundation in law gained by a successful student should be sufficient to permit him or her to proceed onto the further professional training necessary to become a solicitor.
A graduate will acquire a critical understanding of and approach to the diversity of legal issues in contemporary Irish society - skills useful to a career in law and transferable to employment in business, government, social work and academia.
The employment market appears buoyant at present for graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Law. Recent graduates have found employment principally in private laws firms throughout Ireland. Some have sought employment in government, in business and lecturing at third-level educational institutions.
Some students take the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Preparation for Law Society of Ireland (Blackhall Place) FE-1Entrance Exams. With the exception of Family Law , European Human Rights Law and Employment Law, the subjects covered are all examinable as part of the FE-1 exams.
All students attend a year-long module entitled ' Core Legal Skills' in order to provide them with sufficient foundation for the study of substantive legal topics. In this introductory module, an emphasis is placed on practical skills such as accessing the law, and reading and analysing legal material, conducting research and approaching examinations and other assignments. Students are required to select a further 5 modules in a variety of substantive areas of law ; the modules on offer include company law, constitutional law, contract law, criminal law, employment law, equity, European human rights law, European Union law, family law, property law, and the law of torts (not all subjects are available in all years).Other modules may be available. Students may attend as many modules as they wish, but are assessed in only six.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThis programme should be of particular interest to students hoping to complete the FE-1 Law Society of Ireland entrance exams. Students considering a career in insurance, banking, financial services, social work, human resources, human rights, justice and the civil and public service generally may also find this programme useful.
Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies ordinarily requires at least a second class honours primary degree (2.2 grade or higher) or a recognised equivalent of an academic qualification. Candidates with a pass degree and a recognised higher diploma or Masters qualification with a 2.2 honours or higher may also be considered. An interview may be required.
