This course is designed for both uk/eu and International students with a background in a relevant biological discipline, who wish to learn more about the theory and practice of crop biotechnology but who wish to learn and practice the business skills that will allow them to pursue careers in a crop biotechnology business environment.

The new knowledge driven economy needs people with technical knowledge and also the skills to commercialise cutting edge research. Such people work in management within existing companies,particularly at the technical-business interface or may take the exiting opportunity to set up their own business venture. Thus interdisciplinary, stand alone MSc degree course provides a new pattern of graduate training.

Candidates will be selected from graduates holding at least an upper second class honours (or equivalent) degree in a relevant subject e.g. biology, biotechnology, crop science which provides sufficient background for the course. Relevant workplace experience may, in some circumstances, be accepted as qualification for entry.

Career Opportunities

This course is vocationally-orientated and aimed at people who want to work in the crop biotechnology business environment. After completing the course, you may decide to work in management within existing companies, particularly at the technical-business interface, or may take the exciting opportunity to set up your own business venture.

Contents

This course requires you to take 60 credits of modules in crop biotechnology and 60 credits of business modules to gain a strong balance of subject-specific and business-related skills.

You will then undertake a 60-credit technology transfer project, where you will apply your new business skills to a problem of commercialisation of a crop biotechnology opportunity.

In addition to the specific training and skills acquisition in crop biotechnology and business provided by the taught modules, the degree course is designed also to develop transferable personal and professional skills necessary not only for completion of the course, but for future career development generally.

Course Structure

The MSc in Crop Biotechnology and Entrepreneurship is delivered on a full-time basis over one year or part-time over two years.

This course comprises 180 credits - you will take 120 credits´ worth of taught modules over the autumn and spring semesters before completing a 60-credit technology transfer project towards the end of the course.

Assessment methods vary across the modules but typically consist of a combination of:

  • Written examinations at the end of the appropriate semester associated with the lecture-based modules
  • Formal coursework assignments associated with the lecture modules
  • Research project
  • A viva voce examination

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Candidates will be selected from graduates holding at least an upper second class honours (or equivalent) degree in a relevant subject e.g. biology, biotechnology, crop science which provides sufficient background for the course.

Relevant workplace experience may, in some circumstances, be accepted as qualification for entry.

Candidates whose first language is not English, you must also achieve an acceptable TOEFL level (total mark 573 [230 computer based] or above with a TWE of 4.5) or IELTS result (Test band score 6.5 or above with no less than 6.0 in each element) Applicants are strongly advised to arrange to take the IELTS test via their closest British Council.

Successful completion of a full-time pre-sessional English Language course for International students run by the Centre for English Language Education at the University of Nottingham will also be acceptable.
