Contents

The Master Programme in English is a two-year programme comprising three specializations:

  • English language;
  • English literature; and
  • American literature and culture.

You choose one of these specializations. The programme aims to deepen your knowledge of the literature and history of either Britain or the United States, or of the English language. You are trained in methods of research and in advanced academic writing.

The programme consists of core modules and electives taught by field specialists through a combination of seminars and written assignments.

English language

The English language specialization, The English language: present and past perspectives, is oriented towards empirical research in, for example, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, and English as a foreign language.

English literature

The English Literature specialization, Textual transitions: English literature on the move, focuses on historical and theoretical transitions in English literature from Shakespeare to postmodernism and beyond, including gendered and postcolonial critiques.

American literature and culture

The main focus of the American literature specialization, Making it new: American literature past and present, lies on changes in literary concerns, thematic as well as aesthetic, from the American renaissance to the post-postmodern.

English is the working language of the Department of English. In the master programme, instruction, class discussions and examinations are in English, as are all teaching materials. Instruction takes the form of seminars. You are examined both orally and in writing and in the form of continuous assessment.
