The Master Programme in International Health prepares professionals with medical or other undergraduate degrees to play leadership roles in promoting global health. This program equips students from multiple disciplines and all continents with skills to appreciate and analyze global health problems and to develop and evaluate actions to improve public health. A special emphasis is given to child health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, public health in humanitarian assistance and public health nutrition.
The Master programme in International Health is an appropriate education for job opportunities in the field of global public health and humanitarian action. There are job opportunities within governmental and non-governmental organizations, nationally and internationally. There is also a possibility to continue the research track after the master degree.
The programme is composed of compulsory and elective courses and includes an opportunity for the students to plan, perform, analyze and report an independent research project in the field of global health.
The compulsory courses are offered every academic year. Students can meet the degree requirements in two academic years by completing their courses and their degree projects. The degree projects should address a topic in global health. This normally involves analysis of data obtained from the students´ own field work or secondary data. Students must write a project report and present their work at a seminar.
The education includes lectures, seminars, group work, and project/research work. It is deeply rooted in current international health research and includes presentations on ongoing research at the department as well as by invited scientists. The lecturers have vast experience of global health work in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The seminars are designed to develop the ability to understand, interpret and critically evaluate scientific literature. This also includes exercises to discuss results and choice of methods and to summarize facts and hypotheses both orally and in writing. The increasing depth of theoretical knowledge is measured at the examination of the different courses. The ability to analyze, evaluate and draw conclusion from scientific data is judged at specific seminars and theoretical tasks.
