The Master of Geology programme is a two-year advanced study programme organised jointly by KU Leuven and Ghent University. The Master’s students receive an in-depth training in general geology and a specialised training in selected disciplines of geology. The Master of Geology training provides the social attitudes and skills to work in an interdisciplinary team with the aim to reach the best possible coherent solution for a specific geological problem.
Career prospects
Careers in Geology, or in the broad field of Geosciences are, in principle, independent from the specialisation followed in the Master of Geology. You may be involved in development tasks, research or management functions. In consultancy, you are likely to find a job in environmental geology, hydrogeology or geotechnology. In industry you will often be involved in exploration, exploitation and treatment of natural resources. In governmental agencies you may be responsible for the inventory and management of the subsurface and for diverse environmental issues.
With a degree of Master of Geology you may also consider a short or longer period at a university, in Belgium or abroad, in the framework of a PhD study or a research project of the industry or governmental agencies.
The master student will receive an in-depth training in general geology and a specialised training in selected disciplines of geology. Furthermore, emphasis is put on acquiring general academic skills such as research and exploration, reporting, cooperation with fellow students and researchers.
The student receives the necessary training to analyse and solve new, broader and more complex geological problems. He obtains the scientific attitude to solve these problems by selecting and applying advanced methods (qualitative and quantitative field analysis, direct and indirect observation techniques, physical and chemical analytical techniques, modelling of geological processes, etc).
One should not only have hands-on knowledge of the techniques and the basic principles, but also be able to appraise the potential and the limitations of the different techniques. In a rational and scientific way, he is able to process and to report the research results, to publish them in reports and in a master thesis (monograph), and to present and defend these results orally in a structured way, aided by modern communication techniques. The Master in Geology has the social attitudes and skills to work in an interdisciplinary team with the aim to reach the best possible coherent solution for a specific problem.
In the master program two specialisations, i.e. Georesources and Geosphere and Biosphere dynamics, can be chosen. In the specialisation Georesources, the student will be able to gather and to interprete geological information with the aim to apply the knowledge to the preparation of construction and infrastructure works, to the tracking of soil and groundwater pollution, to the construction of dumping sites, to the management and protection of drinking water reservoirs, to the applications of industrial raw materials (clay, sand, limestone), and the exploration for ores and fossil fuel.
The Geosphere and Biosphere dynamics focuses on the ability to gather and interprete geological information about the dynamic evolutin of the geosphere and about the interactions between the geosphere, hydrospere, atmosphere and the biosphere. A proper understanding between the interaction between life and earth and between the different geological reservoirs on earth is reached.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
