In addition to broadening your own subject knowledge, you'll learn how to make this knowledge accessible and interesting to students and discover a range of innovative teaching methods including the internet, field trips and even chemical egg races!
This programme is carefully structured and will enable you to develop the highest professional standards and knowledge, providing a solid grounding in the theory and practice of science education. You will receive professional and up-to-date training in all aspects of teaching and become skilled at teaching this vibrant subject up to A-level and GNVQ.
You will be trained as a science teacher who specialises in Chemistry, so you will also take complementary courses in Biology and Physics. These courses are designed to develop both subject knowledge and teaching techniques, and are taught by specialist tutors.
Course Structure
Our training programme consists of four modules (totalling 60 credits) which are all at Masters level, and one practical teaching module.
Experiences in the University and in partnership schools are designed to prepare you to teach the full 11-18 Secondary age range and you will have opportunities to work with teachers and children in both Secondary Key Stages and post-16. Your training will prepare you to plan, teach and assess the curriculum for your chosen subject area.
The Education & Professional Studies module is designed to further your understanding of the development and needs of secondary school children and the ways in which their learning may be organised, managed and assessed through a variety of teaching strategies. These sessions support and complement the work done in taught subject modules and are closely linked to your school-based work.
Placements
During the course you will undertake placements within two different partnership schools. We have partnership schools in all the Local Authorities in the region and our colleagues in school work very closely with us to foster all areas of our trainees' professional development.
Teaching and assessment
There are many aspects of teaching that are common to all science subjects, such as language in the science curriculum, assessment, questioning and explaining techniques. During the course you will learn these aspects through working as part of a mixed-science group.
You will be taught using a range of teaching methods that you will employ yourself, including formal teaching, laboratory and group work, discussion and role play.
You will be assessed through self-evaluation, observation of your teaching, and a negotiated process based upon an on-going professional dialogue between your school-based tutors and university tutors
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
