The programme will enable you to develop teaching strategies and the knowledge, skills and practical experience you need to succeed in the classroom, including how to design and construct teaching materials, organise pupil interaction and make the most of ICT.
Our course allows you to offer French, German or Spanish as individual teaching languages or to combine these with a second language (French, German or Spanish).
In order to study the second language, you must normally have a good 'A' level pass in the subject and, ideally, some residence in the country concerned. Applicants who pass French and German Extension Programmes and other similar programmes are also eligible.
If you have two languages, we provide a series of one half-day sessions, in your second language, to help you enhance your competence.
If you only have one language, you have the opportunity to take our Primary MFL option, which, although not qualifying you as a primary school teacher, offers valuable insights and practice into teaching languages at Key Stage 2.
Your studies will be supported by a series of `core interactive inputs´ with linked workshops covering issues such as Modern Languages in the National Curriculum, lesson planning, the Development of language skills, Learning strategies, Inclusion and new trends in public examinations.
Course Structure
Our training programme consists of four modules (totalling 60 credits) which are all at Masters level, and one practical teaching module.
Experiences in the University and in partnership schools are designed to prepare you to teach the full 11-19 Secondary age range and you will have opportunities to work with teachers and children in both Key Stages and post-GCSE. Your training will prepare you to plan, teach and assess the curriculum for your chosen subject area.
The Education & Professional Studies module is designed to further your understanding of the development and needs of secondary school children and the ways in which their learning may be organised, managed and assessed through a variety of teaching strategies. These sessions support and complement the work done in taught subject modules and are closely linked to your school-based work.
Placements
During the course you will undertake placements within two different partnership schools. We have partnership schools in all the Local Authorities in the region and our colleagues in school work very closely with us to foster all areas of our trainees' professional development.
Teaching and assessment
Utilising a wide range of teaching resources, including ICT and studying both independently and as part of a group, you will construct a professional file of ideas, reflections, reviews, lesson materials and lesson plans.
You will be assessed through self-evaluation, observation of your teaching, and a negotiated process based upon an on-going professional dialogue between your school-based tutors and university tutors.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
