Who is the MSc in Finance for?

The programme is aimed at those with a business or business-related background who want to pursue a career in the financial services sector. It is available to those wanting to study full-time or part-time. Part-time study classes are scheduled throughout the day and evening during the week so employer support is essential.

Objectives The MSc in Finance aims to advance your understanding of finance theory and practice and its relevance in the marketplace. It encourages you to develop creative and analytical approaches to problem-solving and to enhance your interpersonal and leadership skills.

What will I learn? You will acquire a strong understanding of financial processes and procedures and develop the knowledge and skills (both professional and personal) necessary for a career in finance.

After completing the MSc in Finance you will have:

* A comprehensive understanding of firms' financial management decisions in the context of how they contribute to maximising shareholder and stakeholder value.
* A critical awareness of the operation and functions of international financial markets; of the various securities and their pricing; and of the wide range of risk management tools and strategies.
* An enhanced knowledge of the principles of portfolio management.
* A critical awareness of the risk-return trade-off and its importance in assessing investments, risk management and firms' financial decisions.
* An applied knowledge of modern econometric methods.

Furthermore this programme will enable you to:

* Critique and evaluate theoretical and empirical research in finance and effectively apply its findings where appropriate.
* Analyse the management and strategic contexts in which financial decision-making takes place.
* Describe and evaluate how global economic, regulatory and political factors affect the environment in which financial markets and institutions operate.
* Analyse, synthesise and evaluate the impact of internationalisation on financial markets, institutions, instruments and the financial services industry.
* Work effectively in teams.
* Develop the capacity for completing independent research.
* Enhance interpersonal and communication skills, including making presentations and preparing reports.
* Develop an enthusiasm for life-long learning.

The MSc in Finance from UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School gives you a specialist education in finance with the flexibility of part-time and full-time options.

Programme structure To complete the programme you must complete six core modules. In the summer term you can choose between three modules or take the module Resarch Methods and complete a research project.

you will need one of the following:

* A minimum second-class honours degree in business or a finance related area.
or
* An honours Higher Diploma in Business Studies.
or
* A primary degree with a minimum of three years´ work experience in the specialisation you are applying for a related area.
