The broad curriculum ensures participants gain a thorough understanding of the nature and operation of international finance. The programme aims to give participants the tools necessary to succeed in the challenging world of finance and while other programmes focus on theory alone, the EADA Master in Finance Diploma uses a practical approach taking advantage of the case study methodology. On completion of the programme, participants will have acquired essential knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in finance.
Methodology
EADA has developed its own practical, active and participatory approach with emphasis on "learning by doing". The methodology reflects companies' demand for professionals with skills such as: the capacity to reflect, ability to act in the face of change, versatility to work in multifunctional teams and adaptability to the challenges of a global environment.
These competencies are developed at EADA through the Case Method, Business Projects, Business Simulations, Analysis & Discussion Groups and Team Working activities. Participants are consistently placed in real-life business situations and forced to think like executives and make strategic decisions.
Strategic Management
This course explains how a company works and how it determines strategy. Participants learn about the decision-making process in a company, what managers do, and what the outcomes of different strategies are. At the end of this course participants are able to evaluate the appropriateness of different strategic solutions in a wide variety of business circumstances.
International Economy
The course aims to provide participants with an understanding of the economic and political factors which determine the behaviour of international companies. The course will analyse the opportunities, challenges and new trends arising from globalisation. In addition, participants will learn how to identify economic indicators and determinants of economic policy.
Financial Mathematics
Financial mathematics refers to a set of techniques used in finance to evaluate quantitative data. This course aims to provide participants with the tools necessary to understand the concept of discount rates and the calculations involved in the evaluation of cash flows. In addition, participants will be able to make use of statistical techniques in the analysis of data and use these results in the financial decision-making process.
Financial Accounting
Participants are given a detailed insight into the principles of accounting and financial reporting. Emphasis is placed on the application of international financial standards, establishing the effects on financial statements, the balance sheet and the profit and loss account. The study of key accounting measurement techniques and ratios enables the participant to prepare and analyse financial statements.
Business Analysis
This course follows directly from the course on Financial Accounting. The aim of this course is to provide participants with the tools to analyse the impact of their decisions on the firm from an accounting perspective. Participants learn how to interpret financial statements, forecasting concepts, the difference between financial and management accounting, and to understand both qualitative and quantitative issues in the construction of financial statements.
Financial Products and Markets
The course provides participants with a strong fundamental understanding of the workings of the foreign exchange, short-term interest rate markets and bond markets. A strong emphasis is placed on pricing financial instruments, how they are traded, and how banks and financial managers use them to manage risk. Participants learn the importance of central bank activities and how they relate to the financial system.
Financial Strategy
Since financial viability is often difficult to achieve, this course explores in detail the different strategies for decision making within the financial area of an institution. This advanced course will focus on policy implementation using techniques acquired in previous courses.
Valuation
This advanced corporate finance course covers a number of key areas. Participants learn how to choose appropriate capital budgeting techniques through the identification of relevant cash flows, costs and salvage values. In addition, participants learn how to calculate the cost of capital and perform weighted average costing computations. The course also explains the optimum capital structure of the firm given refinancing requirements using market data. Finally, participants examine several long-term financing alternatives with respect to mergers, acquisitions and other opportunities.
Equity Markets
This course provides the participant with a strong fundamental understanding of equity markets and the types of securities traded in them. Emphasis is placed on fundamental and technical analysis together with trading strategies and equity analysis.
Risk Management
Risk management has become one of the most important financial areas for both financial institutions and large corporations. After completing this course, participants will be able to identify, measure and manage market and credit risk. The increasingly used Value at Risk model is explored in detail together with its relevance to the implementation of the Basel III capital adequacy requirements.
Mergers & Acquisitions
Participants acquire the knowledge to analyse the strategic issues surrounding corporate restructuring with respect to mergers and acquisitions. The course takes participants through the process of identifying, screening, selecting and valuing a potential M&A candidate from the different parties’ perspectives. The course also studies post M&A integration issues.
Private Finance
Private Finance has become increasingly important in the funding of M&A and LBO´s. In addition, hedge funds, private equity and venture capital all play major roles in the financial markets. This course explains the importance of private finance, how the market has developed, the compensation and rewards driving the industry, and how it creates value.
Derivatives
An understanding of derivatives and derivative markets is essential for all those wishing to enter the world of finance. The course focuses on interest rate derivatives with emphasis placed on futures, options, interest rate swaps and currency swaps. Participants learn how to price and trade the most widely used derivative instruments.
Trading Simulation
Our programme is not just about giving you the theoretical tools to cope with the changing financial landscape. We have a simulated trading room using state of the art software where you will learn how to trade foreign exchange, bonds, equity, futures, swaps and options. The programme also demonstrates how trades affect the balance sheet, how positions are managed, and what happens when trading limits are exceeded!
Business Simulation The objective of this course is to demonstrate how to maximise shareholder worth. Participants are thrown into real life situations where they have to manage the principle activities of the company e.g. the selling price, likely demand for sales in units, unit production, make investment decisions, raise capital to match liquidity, manage working capital etc. In addition, participants must decide whether to increase the size of the plant or machinery to allow for extra capacity and evaluate capital projects using DCF.
International Weeks During the International Weeks, participants have the opportunity to choose additional electives. The International Weeks module is included in all full time EADA programmes, and is an ideal opportunity to make contact with participants in other programmes. In order to offer all the participants a different perspective, EADA invites visiting professors from partner business schools in addition to senior managers with outstanding experience to deliver courses on a range of interesting topics.
Final Project
The final project aims to ensure that participants learn to apply the results of their academic study to real-life management problems and solutions. The project is carried out in groups and is presented to a panel of financial experts at the end of the programme in June. There is an award for the best Master in Finance final project.
Professional Development Modules All full-time Master participants complete 4 residential modules at EADA’s Collbató campus as part of the Professional Development Programme (PDP):
• Module 1: Teamwork and cultural diversity
• Module 2: Presentation skills
• Module 3: Negotiation techniques
• Module 4: Leadership skills and Integration module
The PDP includes a plan of personal and professional growth for participants in the International Masters. This plan will be referred to throughout the year and helps position them for entry into the business world. The individual modules are based on developing the key competencies needed to succeed in the business world: the ability to work in diverse teams and adapt to multicultural environments, the ability to communicate effectively in the business world and to make powerful presentations, negotiation techniques and leadership skills.
At the end of the modules, the participants have the opportunity to consolidate what they have studied during the year, reflect on their own learning, and give and receive feedback from their classmates and professors-facilitators.
