The Cardiff MSc in Applied Environmental Geology is focused on providing students with skills appropriate to a career with geo-engineering and geo-environmental consultancies, with regulatory authorities and government.
Aims and objectives of the course
* To provide a sound scientific understanding of geoenvironmental and geotechnical issues and practice.
* To provide a vocational training in Applied Environmental Geology appropriate to the needs of a modern industrial society.
* To provide training in scientific research methods and to develop a range of transferable skills.
* To develop an appreciation of the significance of geological data in environmental assessment, protection and engineering.
* To provide skills and knowledge to assess and respond appropriately to environmental impacts of a range of human activities.
* To provide knowledge of the legal framework that governs geoenvironmental and geotechnical practice in the UK and Europe.
Special features of this programme:
* Vocational and research training, providing an ideal basis for both industrial employment and future research
* Substantial industrial collaboration both in lectures and project work. site visits and industrial seminars are organised throughout the year
* Students undertake projects with an industrial partner, the majority in paid placements. the aim is to provide practical industrial experience for all students.
The MSc Applied Environmental Geology course comprises a six-month taught course (Stage 1) followed by six months with an industrial partner undertaking project work for the dissertation (Stage 2).
The taught course includes significant contributions from industrial collaborators and is assessed through examination and continual assessment.
1st six months (Taught Courses):
Geotechnical Engineering; The Engineering Behaviour of Soils; Land Contamination, Assessment and Remediation; Remote Sensing and Geophysics; Environmental Assessment and Regulation; Hydrology and Hydrogeology; Transferable Skills; Project Planning, Design and management.
2nd six months (Project Work):
Industrial placement with engineering consultancy, local authority, and other environmental agencies. Site-based project work leads to submissions of MSc dissertation in September.
A 20,000-word dissertation is submitted at the end of Stage 2. Students are offered a summer industrial placement to undertake their project work.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

1st or 2nd class UK Honours degree or equivalent. Suitable for graduates in Earth sciences and related subjects, environmental science and related subjects, mining, civil, processing and environmental engineering and related subjects.
