Today television and film are commonly regarded as the most popular and most important communication media worldwide, with the following three functions deserving special acknowledgement: Television/film as

1) leading medium for social and cultural development,

2) as unique manifestation of our cultural and artistic heritage,

3) as a future "killer application" within the digital broadband networks of the 21st century.

Participants will aquire skills in the following key areas

- market analysis, target group research
- evaluation criteria for scripts
- production management
- co-production with other production companies (domestic and foreign)
- different types of film financing
- development of innovative products and services
- communication techniques, conflict management
- self development, management skills

Job qualifications

- production management in film production companies
- staff member of a TV station´s editorial department
- film purchasing for TV stations
- film trading for distribution companies

Target groups

- art studies graduates (film, visual arts, architecture, etc.)
- graduates from the humanities, cultural studies, economics, with a focus on audiovisual media
- professionals with long-term experience in the filmbusiness or corresponding qualification


Contents

The university study course `TV and film production´ is divided into modules and consists of the following six teaching units:

MODULE 1:

Story development and dramaturgy

- criteria for the evaluation and selection of stories and plots
- suitability of storylines for different sections of the market
- strategic planning of distribution as part of the development phase
-general rules of dramaturgy and psychological mechanisms of narratives as basic principles for the selection of a storyline

MODULE 2 :

European coproduction

-cooperation and coproduction with film production companies abroad;
- acquisition of subsidies from national and European film funds
- communication with commissioning editors and initiation of coproductions between several TV-stations
-networking based on creative as well as strategic levels

MODULE 3:

Film financing / budgeting

- options in and types of film financing
- financial planning and controlling
- financing the media: case studies
- governmental measures for maintaining an independent national film culture (funding)

MODULE 4:

Distribution and legislation in the film market

- market for TV programs
- distribution of movies for cinema
- additional ways of commercialization: video, streaming media, internet video, DVD, merchandising products
- marketing strategies and tools
- basic legislation with regard to TV and film production
- legal situation with regard to film distribution

MODULE 5:

Production management & professional communication

- conditions and structure of production (domestic and foreign)
- project management, crisis management, risk reinsurance
- an executive producer´s responsibilities
- professional communication in a creative working environment
- professional team culture and decision-making processes
- self-development, motivation

MODULE 6:

Distribution media, new media

- analysis of the distribution channels cinema, TV, video, DVD and streaming video
- analysis of audience groups, formats and contents
- analysis of genres: TV movie, TV series; documentaries, advertisments (spots), cinema feature films, image films, webcasting, streaming media
- financing plans and rentability of streaming video in broadband networks
- planning/dramaturgy of streaming video content: interfaces between film/video and internet/new media

Master thesis

Written form

You can hand in a dissertation in written form, dealing with a specific problem covered in one of the subjects taught during the study courseminimum: 50 pages.

Film

You can also hand in a film. In regard to genre, the film has to be a documentary; its topic has to relate to the study course subjects; research and topic development need to follow scientific criteria. Research has to be comprehensible, results have to be substantiated.

Assessment of the film will also be based on its formal criteria. The film has to be in line with the usual formal requirements/ characteristics of a documentary.duration: ca. 30 minutes

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Qualification Profile of Students

applying for the university study course `TV & film - production´
- Basic knowledge of film production
- Basic knowledge of film culture
- An academic degree or a corresponding professional qualification
- Sound knowledge of either German or English
