The Master Programme in Computer Science offers a broad education with an emphasis on knowledge and analytical skills that retain a sustainable value. The curriculum focuses on problem-solving and general principles rather than on particular programming languages or hardware platforms. The overall syllabus prepares the student for a highly qualified and international labor market in industry or research.
The Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University, where you will pursue the Master Programme in Computer Science, is a leader in research in the field of computers. This implies that instruction in the courses is given by leading experts in the various subjects, and that they are always fully up-to-date.
Instruction takes place in an international environment where you will create a global contact network of tutors and researchers, as well as your fellow students. The department has recently received the Uppsala Student Union´s award for best educational institution.
The programme offers a wide range of courses in computer science. Students can create their own specialization by individually combining courses. Most courses integrate theory with practical exercises.
Your choice of courses depends on your background knowledge and personal interests. By selecting suitable courses, you can become specialized in different areas of computer science. You will choose your courses in dialogue with the academic staff, and can always pose questions and discuss with your tutors.
The programme has two specializations:
The objective of this specialization is to provide an individualized world-class education. During the first two terms, you may choose, together with a tutor, courses from the following subfields:
The third term normally consists of a major project course where a large group of students work with a development project together with private industry. This project is followed in the last term by a master thesis that can be carried out in industry or at a university.
Many students choose to do their master thesis outside Sweden, and it is common that the thesis acts as a gateway to the labor market.
Swedish-Chinese specialization in computer science and software engineering
This specialization is offered jointly by Uppsala University and Tongji University, Shanghai, China.
The student takes the first year at Uppsala University and the second year at Tongji University. Focus is placed on courses in computer science and software engineering, supplemented with courses of a cultural nature, such as languages, economy or intercultural relations.
You may create your own specialization by combining courses individually.
Students will study data communication and human-computer interaction together with elective courses.
You may choose between two specializations: data communication or human-computer interaction.
You may apply your knowledge in projects taken from Chinese and international industry, with focus on embedded systems or software engineering.
Finally, in the last semester you will carry out your master thesis project where you will solve a real and relevant problem that is often taken from Chinese or international industry.
The Master Programme in Computer Science, where you have an individual curriculum, offers excellent learning opportunities. However, this requires that you be willing to work hard and be able to take personal responsibility for your work.
The forms of instruction and examination vary and are adapted to the character of the various subjects. This implies that laboratory work and small projects are found in most courses, while certain courses have major projects.
Since the Swedish-Chinese specialization in computer science and software engineering is taught jointly at two universities (Uppsala University, Sweden and Tongji University, Shanghai, China), you will meet industry and research from two different cultures. You will have the opportunity to live in these cultures, and thus form close ties with two cities in different countries - which in turn will open doors in an international labor market.
The Master Programme in Computer Science provides you with the opportunity to work in advanced research and develmasteropment, and become part of cutting-edge advances in the field of IT - such as:
You subsequently obtain considerable potential to determine your own future, and to constantly be on the front line of development.
Master students in computer science are attractive on a highly qualified international labor market. Demand for skills in the field of computer science is considerable, and will grow due to the computerization of society. Most of our students work in the commercial IT sector as project managers or consultants in advanced product development or applied research, where they participate in the development of future products. A number of students start their own company to develop ideas and concepts acquired during their education.
The programme is also an excellent preparation for doctoral studies.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

A bachelor degree, equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time studies), including at least 90 credits in computer science: programming, algorithms, data structures, computer architecture, operating systems, and at least 30 credits in mathematics.
All applicants need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS, see link: entrance requirements.
Selection: Selection will be based on previous academic studies and degrees with emphasis on grades in the field of technology/science, a statement of intent and a summary in English (1–2 pages) of your previous degree project (if any).
Sino-Swedish masterApplicants, who are citizens of the P.R. China are strongly encouraged to apply through School of Software Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, China (http://sse.tongji.edu.cn/English/content.aspx?id=523011725189)
