The Department of Earth Science at Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments of Europe. Research in earth science focuses on subjects that range from the Earth´s core to the atmosphere, on scales from sub-microscopic minerals and fossils to the formation of mountains and oceans, and in time from the formation of the Earth to the processes currently reshaping the planet.
The broad scientific profile of the Department of Earth Science allows the department to offer four specializations in the Master Programme in Earth Science and additional specializations in Meteorology and Geophysics within the Master Programme in Physics. The studies at the department encompass air, water and landscape sciences, palaeobiology, solid earth sciences and geophysics.
Applied research in earth science is directed towards resource and environmental issues which are both fundamental in the perspectives of sustainable development and world economy.
The combination of breadth and depth is a distinguishing feature of our Master Programme in Earth Science. This reflects the scientific profile of the Department of Earth Sciences which includes most major fields in the study of our planet: geology, palaeobiology, physical geography, hydrology, geophysics and meteorology, in addition to environmental sciences. The lecturers in the programme are experts in their respective fields, giving you up-to-date contact with front-line research in an open and creative educational atmosphere.
Courses during the first term are common for all students. After that, students gradually specialize by choosing subjects to create a personal competence profile.
There are four specializations:
The Geology course outline contains the core subjects in mineralogy, petrology, geodynamics and tectonics, which reflect the main themes of the research programme including earth material science. Combined with a main course on natural resources the specialization is aimed at preparing the students for a research career or employment as a professional geologist.
GeologyThe Geology course outline contains the core subjects in miner-alogy, petrology, geodynamics and tectonics, which reflect the main themes of the research programme also including earth material science.
Combined with a main course on natural resources, the special-ization is aimed at preparing you for a research career or employment as a professional geologist.
Hydrology/Hydrogeology
The hydrology/hydrogeology specialization combines courses on climate variation and the interaction between climate and landscape, and a number of core courses in hydrology.
Some of the latter are oriented towards engineering. The level of specialization in hydrology is higher than at any other Swedish university.
Palaeobiology
Palaeobiology courses range from palaeobiological principles to developmental biology through time, the early evolution of life and the origin and evolution of vertebrates. This is mainly a research-oriented specialization, but has applications also in prospecting geology and the oil industry.
Physical Geography
Physical geography presents climate variation and climate-landscape interaction as the basis for core courses in geomorphology and glaciology. This specialization also includes a course on natural resources in cooperation with geology.
All specializations are complemented by one or two (optional) degree project(s), each corresponding to one term (20 weeks).
The teaching consists of a balanced mix of theoretical and practical work. Excursions and field courses are included in some courses. Examination generally includes written exam complemented by seminar presentation/discussions, project work, laboratory and/or field reports.
The courses are designed to meet the requirements for a future PhD education and a possible career in research as well as the social demand for highly qualified earth scientists in an international labor market.
The need for professional earth scientists has increased considerably during the last few years due to growing awareness of environmental issues and the rising prices of natural resources.
Research topics presently dealt with by researchers at the department can be found at www.teknat.uu.se/english and at www.geo.uu.se.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
