Location of Uppsala University

Mathematics plays a central role in computer science, modern technology and natural science, as well as in newer fields such as financial mathematics and biostatistics. You may choose among one of the master programme´s five different specializations, depending upon your particular interest. At the Department of Mathematics in Uppsala, you will meet students and tutors filled with enthusiasm for mathematics and you will be able to take part in the very active research groups´ seminars.

All specializations enable you to continue on doctorial studies in one or several of the mathematical doctorial fields. The specialization of financial mathematics also enables you to continue on doctorial studies in economics, provided you choose appropriate elective courses.

The general programme is primarily designed for those who intend to continue with doctorial studies in mathematics. For a professional career outside the university, you should combine your advanced mathematical knowledge with an applied subject.
The labor market for financial mathematicians has been good in recent years, and the future outlook is deemed by all forecasters to be bright. Complex financial instruments are now used not only in the pure finance sector but also, for example, by the manufacturing industry to secure future deliveries of raw materials with the help of forward transactions and options instead of maintaining large inventories. Traditional knowledge of economics is not sufficient to manage such financial instruments, implying that advanced mathematical and computational techniques are also required.

The labor market for qualified mathematical statisticians is also good. Mathematical statisticians are found, for example, at:

  • Insurance companies
  • Banks
  • Consultancy agencies
  • Pharmaceutical companies
  • The Swedish Medical Products Agency
  • SCB (Statistics Sweden)

The specializations towards applied mathematics and applied logic prepare you for a professional career in areas where mathematical modeling and mathematical computations play a central role.

You can give your own programme a unique profile by choosing courses in numerical analysis, signal processing, systems engineering or computer science, in addition to traditional courses in applied mathematics and applied logic. This profile will enable you to successfully compete with graduate engineers in technical physics, IT or computer science.

Contents

The Master Programme in Mathematics offers intensive studies of relevant mathematical theories, which are combined with practical projects in the applied specializations. The degree projects lead up to current research in pure mathematics and natural science, as well as to relevant applications in industry.

The Master Programme in Mathematics has five specializations that reflect the traditional division of the major mathematical field into pure and applied mathematics respectively. The specializations have different qualification requirements and separate courses in the first term, after which several courses become the same for the various specializations.

The considerable freedom of choice enables you to form an individual profile for your programme. You may also choose courses from other subjects than mathematics, such as numerical analysis, signal processing or systems engineering. Certain courses are not provided every academic year. Details are set forth in the syllabus for each respective academic year at the Department of Mathematics website. You 1can also choose subjects that are outside the programme, such as physics and astronomy for example.

General programme - Pure Mathematics

In the general programme, you will mainly study pure mathematics, where you will learn to report central mathematical concepts, be able to broadly describe how the results are logically related, and be able to prove important theorems.

Financial Mathematics

The objective of this specialization is that you shall be able to use your knowledge to construct models for the pricing of advanced financial instruments. This specialization also provides you with advanced knowledge of stochastic modeling and parabolic differential equations with application to financial models, as well as advanced knowledge of macro- and micro-economics. Moreover, practice is also included in performing extensive computations and simulations of financial models.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

Financial MathematicsA bachelor of science degree, equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time studies), including 90 credits in mathematics with at least 20 credits in probability theory, programming and/or numerical analysis.
All applicants also need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Selection will be based on previous academic studies and degrees with emphasis on grades in relevant fields, a summary in English (1-2 pages) of a previous degree project (if any), and a statement of intent.

Pure matematicsBachelor of science degree, equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time studies), including 90 credits in mathematics.

All applicants also need to verify English language proficiency. This is normally attested by an internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Selection will be based on previous academic studies and degrees with emphasis on grades in relevant fields, a summary in English (1-2 pages) of a previous degree project (if any), and a statement of intent.

Additional Requirements

Minimal degree required: Bachelor's degree
Minimal amount of work experience Not specified

Language Proficiency

IELTS Band: 6.5
TOEFL Paper-based: 575
TOEFL Internet-based: 90

Accreditation

1,5 Swedish higher education credits is one week of full-time studies and a semester consists of 20 weeks, i.e. 30 credits. Thus one year of full time studies equals 60 credits.
