Diversity in terms of cultural, linguistic and religious differences is increasingly becoming a challenging and fascinating characteristic of both the personal lives of individuals and the context in which organisations and institutions operate. On the one hand, new cultural and religious symbols and rituals and new languages offer new options that inspire individuals to make up their own identity. On the other hand, new cultural, religious and linguistic influences may also prompt people to take more defensive or fundamentalist reactions.
People with different cultural backgrounds, who speak different languages and adhere to different religions, meet in society and try to work together in organisations and at work. These encounters raise all kinds of cooperation challenges and problems, i.e. organisational issues. For example, what does it mean to a hospital when patients with various religious beliefs need tailor-made care? How are production and service delivery affected when people from all parts of the world come together to communicate and work in a company? Cultural diversity of both clients and employees calls on organisations to develop their own management of diversity.
The Master´s programme Organisation of Cultural Diversity (OCD) deals with cultural diversity in societies and organisations. People with diverse backgrounds face challenges and problems when they cooperate in organisations and in multicultural society. The OCD programme teaches students how to analyse, interpret and approach these organisational challenges and problems. On this basis they develop a policy and management perspective for their future professional practice,
The Master´s programme Organisation of Cultural Diversity aims to supply academically educated professionals. After graduation you will be able to work in positions that draw on your analytical capacity and your specific expertise. Your work will either focus on management of a culturally diverse workforce within companies and organisations (profit and non-profit) or you will be working on policy development and implementation regarding issues of cultural diversity in society within governmental organisations or NGOs. More specific: management consultants, project workers, personnel managers, human resource advisors, organisation advisors and consultants, policy researchers, policy advisors, policy makers. The programme´s broad basis provides a strong foundation for moving up the career ladder.
The track Organisation of Cultural Diversity draws on various disciplines, including organisation studies, human resource studies, sociology, anthropology, social psychology, religion studies, and linguistics. It aims at providing students with up to date knowledge and analytical skills to understand these challenges and to develop management and policy responses to deal with these challenges, both in specific organisations and in society at large. Thus students are prepared for jobs focusing on management of diversity in organisations and on policy development jobs in governmental agencies focusing on multicultural society.
The Master´s programme Organisation of Cultural Diversity (OCD) is an English speaking programme of 60 ECTS lasting one year. Every year the programme starts at the end of August with an introduction for all students.
The OCD programme is a compact, intensive and challenging programme. Its first semester starts with a full-time introductory course in which an overview of the topics and approaches of OCD will be provided and in which students have a first site visit to `taste´ OCD in practice. Subsequently, four parallel courses are scheduled in which students study the various approaches to management of diversity and the ways in which cultural diversity is accommodated in organisations. They will also learn the various theories and concepts regarding cultural identity and diversity in society as well as the policy processes that deal with cultural diversity in health care, education and the labour market. These courses require active participation. You will follow lectures and work both individually and in teams to do site visits and prepare papers and presentations.
During the first semester you will also start writing your research proposal, which forms the basis of your Master´s thesis. In the second semester, you will focus primarily on your Master´s thesis. You will do your research and write your thesis individually with the support of your supervisors and fellow students in a Master´s thesis circle of eight students. The thesis will allow you to demonstrate that you master the expertise and academic skills you will need in your future work environment.
