Location of University of Vaasa

The Master's Programme in Telecommunication Engineering is organised by the Department of Computer Science, and it mainly focuses on wireless communication and mobility. The programme also addresses the areas of telecommunication architecture evolution, digital communication and radio technology. Key subject areas in mobile networks are wireless communication, quality of service, mobility and security. The Master's Programme in Telecommunication Engineering mainly focuses on wireless communication and mobility. The programme also addresses the areas of telecommunication architecture evolution, digital communication and radio technology. Programme Structure

Supplementary studies

Maximum of 60 ECTS credits of supplementary studies are required from students holding B.Sc. degree in different but closely related field and from students holding B.Sc. degree from a Finnish polytechnic. Students are expected to make a personal study plan (HOPS) in which student outline his/her overall plans for completing the degree and supplementary studies.

Supplementary studies are obligatory for students holding a polytechnic degree and recommendable for others. For example: Supplementary studies (28 ECTS) to students holding B.Sc. degree from Finnish polytechnic:

Method Studies (16 ECTS)

Minor or Complementary Studies in the Major Subject (25 ECTS)

The students who have not completed their Bachelor’s degree on the field of telecommunications engineering must include a complementary studies to their master’s degree. The students who have completed their Bachelor’s degree on the field of telecommunications engineering may include a minor subject on any field to their degree.

Complementary Studies: Choose courses worth of at least 25 ECTS credits of the following:

* Mobile Communication Services and Systems 5 ECTS
* Advanced Course in Signals and Systems 5 ECTS
* Telecommunication Architectures 5 ECTS
* Telecommunication Software 5 ECTS
* Telecommunication Electronics 5 ECTS
* Separately agreed course (separately agreed with the Head of the programme in personal study plan discussion)

Minor Subjects (25 ECTS)

The purpose of the minor studies is to give the student an opportunity to choose study modules according to their special needs or interests. The minor subject can also strengthen the students’ management skills or expand their knowledge of their own area of specialisation.

Optional Courses (9 ECTS)

The students may choose courses from all the study programmes of the University of Vaasa or other universities.

Requirements

Admission in all of the programmes is based on the following areas:

* Bachelor's degree of the applicant: suitability of the major subject in Bachelor's degree to the Master's programme in question, scope of the degree, applicants success in the previous studies.
* Language proficiency

In addition, the following areas are taken into consideration when evaluating the applications:

* Motivation of the applicant
* Relevant work experience
* International experience

Language proficiency is to be verified by one of the documents listed below:

* Official TOEFL -test with minimum score of 550 in paper-based test, 213 in computer-based test or 79 in iBT (The University of Vaasa TOEFL code is 0647)
* Official IELTS test (Academic) with minimum score of 6.0 (each section minimum 5.5)
* Official CPE certificate with pass grade A, B or C.
* Official CAE certificate with pass grade A, B or C.
* Official National Certificate of Language Proficiency (arranged by Finnish National Board of Education) with an average language skill level 5 or 6 in the English language
* Certificate of secondary education completed in English in EU / EEA countries, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa
* Certificate of English as the A language (i.e. mother tongue) as a part of International Baccalaureate degree, or as the LI (i.e. mother tongue) or the LII (i.e. as the official language) as a part of European Baccalaureate degree
* Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent) completed in English in one of the EU / EEA countries, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. If the language of instruction (English) is not clearly stated in the degree certificate, it is to be verified by a certificate signed by a university official
* English as the major subject in Bachelor's or Master's degree
* Certificate of English as a foreign language in a Finnish university degree

The required documents must be submitted in Finnish, Swedish or English. All translations of the required documents are to be made by an official translator and must bear the signature and stamp of the translator. A certified copy of the original document must be submitted together with the translation.
