The MA track in Holocaust and Genocide Studies is unique in Holland. The courses are provided by the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation.
The word genocide immediately evokes images of the mass murder of Jews during World War II. But there are more twentieth-century examples of genocide: during World War I, Armenians were systematically persecuted and murdered, and more recently during the civil war in Rwanda Tutsis and moderate Hutus were also the victims of genocide. Is this kind of devastation a typical phenomenon resulting from twentieth-century genocidal ideology? The Master's curriculum Holocaust and Genocide Studies, which is part of the Master's History programme, attempts to explore this question.
The curriculum of this programme is interdisciplinary and comparative in character. You will submit all your work in English.
Students of this programme are encouraged to take part in a site visit to the concentration camps. Various other excursions will also be organised, e.g. to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice, depending on which courses are being taken.
The programme Holocaust and Genocide Studies yields 60 ECTS credits:
The programme in Holocaust and Genocide Studies includes a required Master's thesis equivalent to 18 ECTS credits. The thesis topic must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the thesis supervisor.
Please see the document below (in Dutch) for a list of research topics previously chosen by alumni of the MA in Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
