The Urban and Regional Planning programme offers students a thorough understanding of advanced theories and methodologies of urban and regional planning, with a focus on urban and metropolitan areas.
Can metropolitan cities be competitive on a global scale, provide an inclusive urban culture and be sustainable at the same time? How can urban planners contribute to developing effective, efficient and sustainable transport networks for our highly mobile society? The Urban and Regional Planning programme offers students a thorough understanding of advanced theories and methodologies of urban and regional planning, with a focus on urban and metropolitan areas. Core elements of the subject are spatial planning and policy formulation in metropolitan areas, the institutional aspects of spatial interventions and an international comparison of spatial planning traditions and metropolitan governance. Students gain knowledge of other social science disciplines and practice in geographical information systems. This programme is characterised by a close connection with the research of involved professors.
In the various Master courses many topics are related to the lecturers' research.

Students complete the Master Urban and Regional Planning with a thesis where they apply planning theories, methods and techniques. Students write their individual thesis in a masterthesis project.
Fieldwork can be carried out abroad for the thesis (although not necessarily) and students can apply for University funds.
The MSc in Urban and Regional Planning is awarded upon completion of 60 ECTS credits, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project.
The whole programme is in English language, although Dutch students have the right to do their exams in Dutch language since this programme is Dutch accredited.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Previous education: The Master's programme in Urban and Regional Planning seeks students with an academic Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Planning Studies (Planologie), or in another social sciences discipline related to the programme. International diplomas are evaluated on the basis of advice from professional diploma evaluators. The minimum level of the diploma should be equivalent to three years of Dutch university education. Planning Studies All applicants are expected to have a solid basis in the field of planning studies of at least (an equivalent of) 30 EC earned during previous studies. ââ Applicants with a higher professional Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning obtained at a university of applied sciences (HBO) will first need to complete a relevant academic Bachelor's degree or complete a Dutch-taught preparatory year, especially designed for HBO graduates, before applying to the Master's programme. Additional subject: Applicants should have a solid basis in social sciences research methodology reflected by the completion of at least (an equivalent of) 20 EC during previous study.
Language test: All non-native speakers of English (including Dutch students) applying to one of the English-taught programmes offered by the Graduate School of Social Sciences, are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and undertake written work in English. Applicants who are nationals of countries other than the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand are required to submit an English test score that meets specific requirements. ! The Faculty deadline for receiving Huygens scholarship requests is: 31 December 2010. On the online application form please mention the Huygens scholarship request by thicking the relevant box.
The International Office will make a first selection of most excellent students. For this students we will write a nomination letter. Applicants that are part of this selection will receive the nomination letter by e-mail before 1 February 2011 which is the Nuffic deadline for application.
The Faculty of Economics and Business provides a limited number of scholarships for excellent students in the Master's programmes. There is no fixed number of available scholarships. The actual number will be determined by the amount that will be allocated to the Faculty.
Selection procedure
1) Applicants should write an AMS motivation letter (tell us in not more than 300 words your motivation to get the scholarship).
2) Applicants should upload the AMS digital motivation letter to their online application for the MSc programme before March 1st 2011.
3) Before the end of May 2011 we will inform all applicants about the results by e-mail.
Ahold, an international food retailing group based in the Netherlands offers scholarships for non-EU students in the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme. Applicants should have an outstanding academic record and have special interest in retail and the intention to work and live in the USA or Europe after graduation. All non-EU applicants accepted to the MSc in Accountancy and Control programme will receive supplementary information on this Scholarship.
