Many companies are now so worried about the threat from cyber crime that they employ consultants to test the security of their computer systems. As a result, computer specialists skilled in the techniques of Ethical Hacking and in the security measures necessary to protect systems from malicious hacking are currently very much in demand.
An ethical hacker essentially evaluates the security of a computer system or network by simulating an attack by a malicious hacker. The process involves an active analysis of the system for any weaknesses, technical flaws or vulnerabilities. These security issues are presented to the system owner, together with an assessment of their impact, and a proposal for mitigation or a technical solution to the problem.
Students from this course will be equipped with the skills to analyse and secure computer systems and networks.
The course has 4 subject themes:
* Ethical Hacking: the tools and techniques used by hackers and the professional process involved in conducting an Ethical Hack or Penetration Test.
* Security Issues: the underlying security problems within computers and the internet. This includes risk management, social and legal issues, and identity management (how to ensure a user is who they say they are).
* Networking Infrastructure: the design, monitoring, management and security of systems to enable the correct people to have the appropriate privileges within an effective and efficient networked computer system.
* Forensic Computing: the aftermath of a successful unlawful hack. This involves examining the techniques of forensic computing and gathering evidence of an intruder within a system.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
