Location of University of Bristol

The University of Bristol has exceptional research strength in the fields of logic and the philosophy of mathematics. It is ranked by the Philosophical Gourmet Report as the strongest department in the UK for mathematical logic, the second strongest for philosophical logic, and the fourth strongest for philosophy of mathematics. The Philosophy department has strong links with the Mathematics department, and hosts the AHRC Foundations of Structuralism project which investigates the logical foundations of structuralist theories in mathematics and physics, and aims to integrate work done in each of these disciplines.

Our MA draws on these strengths. It is intended for students who wish to study logic, philosophical logic and the philosophy of mathematics. It is open to students with first degrees in philosophy or mathematics

The MA consists of six taught units, examined by essay, and a 15,000 word dissertation.

As a postgraduate student, you will be an active member of the Department's flourishing research culture. You will be encouraged to attend and participate in both the weekly Departmental research seminar and in the Philosophy and History of Science seminars, which often feature well-known scholars in the field, from Bristol and beyond. There is also a weekly postgraduate seminar, where you are encouraged to present your own work before your peers, and where you will learn to develop your argumentative strategies in a supportive environment.
