On this course you will gain a thorough grounding in the principles and methods of typeface design, to equip you with the skills to produce your own digital typefaces. We will give you an understanding of the potential and constraints of current technology, and our unique approach to the subject allows you to study theoretical and historical issues alongside the practical design work you do.
We have designed the course to appeal both to qualified and experienced graphic designers, and those from related fields who can demonstrate a keen sensitivity to the details of typeface design.
Gerry Leonidas leads the course, with major contributions from Gerard Unger (desginer of Swift, Flora and Vesta) and Fiona Ross (who specialises in non-latin designs), and visiting designers from the international type industry.
Your major practical task will be the design of an original typeface, with variants. You will record and reflect on your design process. Reading and essay-writing on the theory and history of the subject, and a dissertation, complete the programme requirements.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
