This course provides you with a broad historical and theoretical perspective on typography and graphic communication and can be taken in preparation for a higher degree by research. It is ideal for graduates from other disciplines drawn to the subject but without a practical background and for design graduates who wish to strengthen their practice of design by developing knowledge and skills in research.
In research methods you will learn how to undertake different types of research, how to evaluate sources, and what is meant by critical reading. In directed reading you will practice your research skills through engaging with a range of literature that provides a grounding in theoretical, historical and empirical aspects of the subject.
You will select a historical or theoretical specialisation: you can chose between learning how to use archives and collections as a research tool, or focusing on the needs and behaviour of users through a range of empiricial approaches from within and outside typography For your dissertation you will choose a topic in consulatation with tutors that enables you to show your intellectual mastery of a particular aspect of design, for example typographic theory, information design, or printing and book design history.
The course is led by Mary Dyson who has over twenty years experience in developing students' research skills at all levels (from undergraduate, through masters, to MPhil and PhD). Students also have access to Department staff such as Michael Twyman and James Mosley.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
