This MA will be concerned with the shaping of identities at borderlines of all kinds. It is interdisciplinary in approach, bringing together colleagues from Modern Languages, Philosophy, Law, Education and Anthropology. It will explore cultural diversity, and beyond that, the human relationship to otherness in its many guises (racial, cultural, gendered, and so on).

Drawing on a number of approaches, it will consider the various ways in which otherness has been considered by anthropologists and philosophers, as well as dealing with current issues such as Islamism, European expansion and globalization. It will also explore issues relating to the representation of otherness in literature, film and the media. Sample topics include the ‘discovery' of the New World; primitivism in Modern Art; the Jazz Age; psychoanalysis and alterity: self as other; gender relations.

Funding details

Unfortunately, our funding competition for 2010/11 has now closed. However, we will again be offering a range of funding opportunities at MA and PhD level for entry in 2011/12, including Durham Doctoral Studentships, and AHRC-funded studentships in Photography Studies and Translation Studies. Full details of the funding competitions for 2011/12 will become available towards the end of this year. In the meantime, you might like to consult the University's postgraduate funding database, which gives details of other potential sources of funding.

Masters Programmes

  • AHRC-funded studentships in Translation Studies and Photography Studies
  • Faculty MA Studentships
  • Hild Bede Scholarship for Medieval and Renaissance Studies

Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

MLAC will be offering three AHRC-funded studentships through the Block Grant Partnership scheme in 2011/12: a PhD studentship in Photography Studies, a Research Preparation Masters studentship in Photography Studies, and a Professional Preparation Masters studentship in Translation Studies. AHRC awards are open to UK and EU students studying full- or part-time. They cover tuition fees and provide maintenance for UK students, and cover fees only for EU students. The PPM in Translation Studies is open to UK and EU students applying to study the School's MA in Translation Studies. The RPM in Photography Studies is open to students applying either to study the School's MA in the Photographic Image, or to pursue an MA by Research in the domain of Photography Studies.

MLAC PhD Studentships

MLAC offered two PhD Studentships in 2010/11. We are hoping to offer similar studentships in 2011/12. MLAC Studentships cover the cost of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and include a grant of £7,000 per year (comprised of a stipend of £6,500 and a research allowance of £500). They also include a package of undergraduate teaching across the three years of the studentship. They are open to UK and EU students planning to study full-time.

Faculty MA Studentships

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities made available ten MA Scholarships for 2010/11, covering fees at the UK/EU rate. These are for students (Home/EU or Overseas) applying for taught or research MA programmes in the Faculty with the serious intention of progressing to PhD work. It is expected that Faculty MA Scholarships will also be made available next year.

Hild Bede Scholarship for Medieval and Renaissance Studies

All those applying for the School's MA in MaRS will be considered. The Scholarship covers the postgraduate fee of a UK applicant, or the equivalent proportion of the fee of an overseas applicant. The Scholarship comes with the condition that the recipient join the College of St Hild and St Bede, which will provide postgraduate accommodation. This includes meals during term time. The College of St Hild and St Bede also offers a prize to the MA student with the best overall results.
